CULTURE NEWS

  • Corpus Christi’s Gulf Coast Idol, a three-day contest by local artist Sergio Espinosa, will feature 20 singers at Old Kress Live competing for prizes including a recording session, cash + national anthem performance; registration is free through Feb. 6. The event takes place Feb. 24 to Feb. 26.  KRIS 6 News
  • The GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles is hosting a limited-time pop-up exhibit featuring personal items and stage outfits belonging to Corpus Christi native Selena Quintanilla, marking the first official display outside the Selena Museum. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corpus Christi ISD announced Teacher of the Year winners for each campus on Jan.15 and said the winners will compete for district elementary and secondary honors in March.  Caller Times
  • Barbi Leo of First Edition will serve as a judge for the first-ever Spanish national spelling bee at CCISD — a chance for local students to showcase their language skills.  KIII-TV
  • Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers criticized CCISD's plan to close seven campuses, saying the proposal leaves families last as the district moves forward with consolidation; officials have not yet provided details on changes.  KIII-TV

  • Corpus Christi International Airport will require travelers without a REAL ID-compliant license to pay a $45 fee for TSA ConfirmID beginning Feb. 1. Officials advise arriving early to avoid potential delays.  KRIS 6 News
  • The federal government restored grants to Coastal Bend Wellness Foundation after three sudden cuts threatened jobs + services, ensuring the nonprofit’s continued operations.  KIII-TV

  • Rep. Vicente Gonzalez warned Wednesday that dropping lake levels risk the Port’s water supply in Corpus Christi plus jeopardize national security as he urged federal backing for water security projects including a planned desalination plant and noted Lake Texana's continued decline.  KRIS 6 News
