  • Port Aransas city leaders announced plans to build a 10-foot bronze marine memorial at Roberts Point Park to honor fallen mariners; the statue will rest on an 8 to 10-foot granite base that greets vessels and will be completed by summer with sculptor H.W. 'Buddy' Tatum.  KRIS 6 News
  • Beloved animal rescuer Ernie Cochran, known as the Queen of Rescue, passed away after battling stage 4 cancer—leaving a legacy of 40 years saving animals at Pee Wee’s Pet Adoption. Best friend Debbie Hammond remembered final hospital moments and said her work inspired others to continue the rescue mission.  KRIS 6 News

  • Midland will headline the Physicians PremiER Concert Series at Rodeo Corpus Christi on Friday, May 8. Pre-sale tickets are available online using code BUCFRIEND from Tuesday, Jan. 27 (10 a.m.) until Friday, Jan. 30 (9 a.m.), with individual sales beginning at 10 a.m.  KRIS 6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Ingleside on the Bay worry about abandoned boats in Ingleside Cove that sink, posing a hazard for fishermen. They contacted Port of Corpus Christi, Coast Guard, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and General Land Office — which said removal costs reach tens of thousands and may take time.  Action 10 News
  • Experts are using drones to rescue cold-stunned sea turtles in Laguna Madre today, as part of a program designed to boost conservation efforts in our community.  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi City Council approved $1M on Tuesday to help fund an 80-unit affordable housing complex for seniors on the Southside near an H-E-B Plus on Saratoga. The funding will close a $2.96M gap with $1.94M in tax credits and a $1M home loan and let construction begin soon.  KRIS 6 News
  • City Council approved a three-year water supply deal with Nueces County Water Control and Improvement District No. 3 on Tuesday to address salty water from groundwater pumping in Corpus Christi. The deal reimburses $1.7 million and lets the city lease 5 million gallons per day from Lake Corpus Christi.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi City Council approved a reclaimed water agreement with Flint Hills Resources today to reuse treated wastewater from the Allison Plant for industrial use at the West Refinery. The deal includes volume commitments starting at 1 million gallons per day & a potential expansion to 2 million, pending city approval.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi City Council appointed three engineers on Jan. 27 to join the Aquifer Storage and Recovery Conservation District that oversees local groundwater projects. John Michael from Hanson Professional Services and Kyle Hooper of Pillar Engineering LLC now add non-city expertise — bolstering board oversight.  Caller Times
