  • Today, YWCA of Corpus Christi opened its renovated weight room with help from a $50K H-E-B donation + community members attended an open house and tried new equipment during demos.  KRIS 6 News
  • A Flour Bluff father replaced a worn memorial sign along Waldron Road to honor his son who died by suicide after enduring bullying more than a decade ago. He hopes the new sign inspires parents to check on their children (and act against bullying) to support mental health.  KRIS 6 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Fire crews are battling a fully engulfed structure near Rockport High School on Enterprise Street today — officials divert traffic at N Live Oak and Omohundro as the cause remains unknown.  KRIS 6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Murphy USA plans to build a new convenience store (2,817 sqft) and gas station at 5126 Weber Road on the southside; construction will begin late June and is expected to finish on December 30.  KRIS 6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Stunt performer and comedian Steve-O is set to bring his (Crash and Burn) tour to Corpus Christi at Mesquite Street Comedy Club, though the local date is not yet announced. The tour kicks off Feb. 1 in Ontario and will visit several other U.S. cities.  KRIS 6 News
  • Bishop Mario Alberto Aviles is now the Diocese of Corpus Christi’ ninth bishop (all masses are canceled for at least two weeks as his leadership begins) and the diocese also reviewed its 150-year history with eight former bishops.  KRIS 6 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Jan. 27, Corpus Christi city council approved a deal for Flint Hills Resources to buy 1M gallons of treated wastewater from Allison Wastewater Treatment Plant for its West Refinery to cut potable water use amid drought. The project may expand to meet 15% of its needs while raising rates.  Caller Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • NUCO full-time students with a 2.5 GPA or higher can apply for the Salvation Army Cain Scholarship, which offers up to $2,000 per year — applications are accepted until Feb. 20.  KIII-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Port of Corpus Christi Center for Wildlife Rescue at Texas State Aquarium rescued 332 cold-stunned sea turtles between January 26 and January 28 after freezing temperatures left them struggling in local waters. The veterinary team treated the turtles and coordinated with NOAA & U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to plan a safe release.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nueces County officials have banned outdoor burning in unincorporated areas for 60 days starting today due to dry conditions and high fire risk — the order allows household trash burning in areas without regular pickup and permits backyard cookouts while requiring hot work to follow fire code rules.  KRIS 6 News
  • Congressman Vicente Gonzalez visited the Port of Corpus Christi to discuss energy exports, job creation, and workforce training with Del Mar College President Escamilla. He said the port sends $2 billion in energy overseas every three days — urging federal support for water projects.  KRIS 6 News
