- ➤ On Jan. 29, 2026, over 100 community members gathered at Doctors Regional Medical Center for a candlelight vigil organized by National Nurses United to honor Alex Pretti, a nurse fatally shot by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents in Minneapolis (attendees included local nurses and community activists). - ➤ Officials approved demolishing the 1914 courthouse, vacant since 1977; the Hooks host a job fair today inside the Citgo Cotton Club from 3 to 7, and a ceremony honoring Dr. Hector Garcia begins at 11 a.m. at Seaside Cemetery for his 112th birthday. KRIS 6 News

- ➤ After a condemnation proceeding on Jan. 28, Tuloso-Midway ISD authorized a $2 million+ deposit with the court to secure 40 acres on McKinzie Road for a new junior high school; the district will start construction in April and realign grades when the school opens for the 2028-29 school year. ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ More than 300 cold-stunned sea turtles were released into the wild at Padre Balli Park on North Padre Island on Jan. 29 by the Texas State Aquarium Wildlife Rescue Center. Caller Times
- ➤ Last week, the ARK helped nearly 140 cold-stunned sea turtles affected by a cold front by releasing them back into warm coastal waters. The effort supported marine life recovery in the area. KIII-TV
