COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Jose Lopez, owner of Chico's Candy Apples, lost his home in a fire but rebuilt his business with community support. Sales doubled as neighbors helped spread the word and Lopez looks forward to returning home soon.  KRIS 6 News
  • VMart hosts a free Lunar New Year Festival on Saturday, Feb. 14 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 3809 Airline Rd where families enjoy lion dances, ice skating, horse rides and food trucks while celebrating the Year of the Horse on Valentine’s Day.  KRIS 6 News
  • CASA of the Coastal Bend announced that CEO Page Hall will retire after nearly 30 years of service supporting foster children. Hall will remain with the organization until a new CEO is named (with 4,000 children served under her leadership) in Aransas and Nueces counties.  KRIS 6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Corpus Christi churches will hold Ash Wednesday services and drive-thru ashes-to-go on Feb. 18 as the Lenten season begins, offering multiple service times at locations such as All Saints' Episcopal Church on S. Staples St. and other churches across town.  Caller Times
  • Bad Bunny became the first Spanish-language artist to headline the Super Bowl halftime show, and his performance resonated with Corpus Christi's Hispanic community who felt seen by its celebration of Latino culture (including imagery of workers and family moments).  KRIS 6 News
  • The Hilliard Center was unveiled yesterday on Shoreline with a lighting ceremony + drone show, marking the debut of its new era. Bob Hilliard said the renaming honors local heritage while amplifying the venue’s role in the community.  KRIS 6 News

  • Sanders Elementary students received a surprise toy donation from local group Nate's Next Kid Up as the school prepares for closure among seven CCISD schools scheduled to close next year (school staff plan welcome activities to help ease student transitions).  KRIS 6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers at the HRI are using high-tech FlowCytobots to detect harmful algal blooms earlier so state agencies can respond quickly and keep swimmers, seafood and wildlife safe.  KIII-TV
  • Nueces County Drainage District No. 2 discovered dark wastewater from Tesla’s lithium refinery pouring into a Robstown ditch without proper notice; they will meet with Tesla on Friday to review test results + ensure safety measures are in place.  KRIS 6 News
  • A looming water crisis raises concerns as local meteorologist John Metz said rain from tropical storms and hurricanes may eventually refill the Coastal Bend's reservoirs (drawing on San Antonio's past water diversification).   • Due to high living costs, many Corpus Christi couples are planning fast-food dates this Valentine’s Day. A survey finds 67% will choose fast-food restaurants, with Chick-fil-A as a top Texas favorite and Dairy Queen, Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and Domino’s trailing as options.  KRIS 6 News
