COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Charity League of Corpus Christi hosted its annual style show and luncheon today at Henry Garrett Hall (Hilliard Center) to raise funds for CCPAL, with all donations going directly to support the nonprofit in the Coastal Bend area.  KRIS 6 News
  • Camp Aranzazu is a bayfront nonprofit camp in Rockport that offers inclusive, year-round adventures (from sailing to marshmallow paint wars) and builds confidence among campers; its ZaZu Music and More event is set for Feb. 28 at Concrete Street Ampitheatre.  The Bend Magazine
  • The 39th Goodwill Run will take place on Saturday, March 7 at Whataburger Field with a 5K run and a 2 mile walk plus a new Vendor Village and costume contest; all funds will support Goodwill Industries’ free job training programs.  KRIS 6 News

  • H-E-B Plus on Waldron Road will start a $185,000 curbside expansion project on March 16 (with work to finish early June) to improve service for families in Flour Bluff and North Padre Island.  KRIS 6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Sacred Heart Church, parishioners gathered for Ash Wednesday Mass as Bishop Mario Alberto Avilés led the service + distributed ashes as a sign of reflection and renewal, marking the start of the 40-day Lenten journey.  Action 10 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kaffie Middle School student Annabelle Cronkhite won her division at the regional science fair with a project on oxygen levels and will advance to the state competition on March 27 and 28 at Texas A&M University, marking her second consecutive year of state advancement.  Action 10 News
  • Corpus Christi families are among nearly 101,800 students statewide applying for the Texas Education Freedom Account program, which helps pay private and home school costs. Local schools like St. Pius X held application nights — the deadline is March 17.  Caller Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Choke Canyon State Park reservoir dropped to 8.7% capacity on Thursday, Feb. 19 as severe drought ended boating, swimming, and fishing while leaving dry, cracked shorelines and empty boat ramps. Visitors, including Paul Miller (a long-time park observer), urge water conservation across the Coastal Bend.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi's job fair will offer over 100 city positions this Saturday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at La Retama Central Library (805 Comanche Street) where departments including Animal Care, Parks and Recreation, Public Works, and Utilities will be present.  Action 10 News
  • Nueces County is receiving over 4,600 early votes for the March primaries—a big jump from 443 at the same point in 2022. Early voting will end Friday, Feb. 27.  Action 10 News
  • The Veterans Affairs office announced a change to how disability ratings are determined, now based on medicated conditions rather than untreated severity. The rule took effect Feb. 17 and applies to new and pending claims plus local officials urge veterans to review cases and submit comments by April 20.  KRIS 6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Corpus Christi restaurants were inspected by the local Nueces County Public Health District from Feb. 12 to Feb. 18; over 50 establishments were scored, with 27 earning perfect marks while a few, like Denny's (90), fell short due to food storage issues.  Caller Times

  • Local surfers are excited as the new Bob Hall Pier debuts on Tuesday & wave conditions are reportedly promising for both experienced riders and local watersports businesses like Wind & Wave Watersports.  Action 10 News
