COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Registration for the Labonte Park Easter event is open until noon on April 17. Local organizers expect families to sign up soon for a close-knit celebration.  KIII-TV
  • This year the Wings Over South Texas Airshow will be held at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi instead of downtown during Buc Days (its new venue).  KIII-TV
  • Funeral arrangements for Edward Espino, a 47-year-old Corpus Christi man killed in an Austin road rage incident last Sunday, will begin on March 31st at 4:00 p.m. with a public visitation at Guardian Funeral Home, continue on the same day with a Holy Rosary and celebration at 6:30 p.m., and resume on April 1st with an 8:00 a.m. visitation and 9:35 a.m. procession to Saint Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church where the mass will start at 10:00 a.m.—he will then be laid to rest at Memory Gardens Cemetery on Old Brownsville Road.  KIII-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • An Ingleside High student received a $48,000 scholarship for his leadership in coaching—volunteering and tutoring—and his strong community impact. The award celebrates his dedication and positive influence on his peers.  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Melissa Draper resigned from her role as the city veterinarian Sunday night—marking the second high-level departure in Animal Care Services less than a week after Director Kathleen Chapa stepped down. City officials have not yet said how this change will affect animal care services.  KRIS 6 News
  • City leaders and venue management disputed the handling of naming rights negotiations for the American Bank Center after councilman Eric Cantu challenged OVG360's claims about reaching out to Thomas J. Henry & questioned the closed executive session's legality. Henry's proposal, offering $1.25 million annually in naming rights, appears more lucrative than the prior deal and has deepened concerns over transparency in the process.  KRIS 6 News

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • The old Sunrise Mall site is planned for redevelopment as Patel Real Estate Holdings, LLC has asked the city to rezone two parcels for a project that includes hotels, a 25-story condominium, apartments, retail, and a convention center. A public hearing is set for April 2 at 5:30 p.m.—the city council will review the request on May 13.  KRIS 6 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Flour Bluff Hornets won their first state championship title in November and were honored Monday at Hornet Stadium — displaying gold medals and a trophy that marked the first win by a local school in 30 years — while coach Kara Wallace said the win could bring more attention to South Texas. MVP Maggie Croft will play college volleyball at SMU next season, a bittersweet move as she parts from teammates including her sister Kate.  KIII-TV
