Good morning, Corpus Christi. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 29th of March.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Coastal Bend Weekend Guide lists local events and activities for residents from March 28th—30th to help plan their weekend.  KIII-TV
  • The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles denied Yolanda Saldivar parole because she still poses a threat to public safety and city officials said mosquito spraying will begin next week in several neighborhoods after recent rain. City Public Works fixed the bump on Ruth Street, the Bishop Police Department will name Lieutenant Sarah Torres as interim police chief on April 1, the YMCA of Coastal Bend will host a Sip and Shop open house on Sunday from noon to 5 p.m., and Metro E. Elementary will perform Seussical the Musical today at 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. — all as part of this week’s local updates.  KRIS 6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Corpus Christi police investigated the March 17 crash that killed 41 year old Sonjia Lewis when she was struck while crossing Airline Road near Holly Road — officers are searching for a dark colored vehicle that may have more information — and they ask anyone with details to come forward.  Caller Times
  • Former Nueces County District Attorney Carlos Valdez said he supports the state decision on Thursday to deny Yolanda Saldivar parole, which sets her next review for March 2030, because releasing her would be dangerous (he noted she has not changed in 30 years).  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials announced that the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Harbor Bridge in Corpus Christi will take place on May 10. The $1.2 billion project began in 2016, will replace the 1950s bridge, and is built taller so larger ships can pass underneath.  Caller Times
  • Councilwoman Sylvia Campos of District 2 disputes an internal investigation stating that on March 4th she defecated on herself in the City Manager’s conference room and that the incident led to a $3,000 cleaning cost—her attorney calls the report false and libelous. The city maintains that the cleaning and furniture replacement were necessary and recommends using alternative meeting methods to avoid similar issues in the future.  KRIS 6 News
