CRIME NEWS

  • Kenedy County Justice of the Peace Jerry William Miller was suspended without pay on April 3 after a grand jury indicted him for cattle theft—he is accused of taking cattle worth under $150,000 from Michael Mendietta on Sept. 20 and may request a hearing within 30 days.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi Police are investigating a death when a body was found on the access road along the 3800 block of U.S. Hwy 77 near the Walmart Supercenter in Calallen (call received at 1:43 p.m.) and officers are checking if the person might have been hit by a car.  KRIS 6 News
  • Police said an overnight shooting on McArdle Road left one man in the hospital (details are scarce) and that they are following all leads as the investigation continues.  KIII-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Festival de Mariachi en la Isla returns to A&M-Corpus Christi this weekend in its 5th year – it will feature family-friendly activities and live music.  KIII-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Over 600 students are competing in a SkillsUSA event that shows off their talents— the contest ends today.  KIII-TV
  • The Gregory-Portland ISD band program made history at the recent UIL Concert and Sight Reading Evaluation when all six middle and high school bands earned top honors. Director Chris Morrow credited the win to year-round practice with a focus on tone and tuning and said the trophies will soon be displayed as the bands prepare for spring concerts.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT has started work on the ramps between S. Staples and Nile Drive as part of a $58 million project to improve safety and mobility—crews are rebuilding both the east and westbound entrances and exits with the project set to finish by 2029.  KIII-TV
  • Vector Control will spray neighborhoods for mosquitoes all week after recent rains—starting Monday in the northwest and moving through West Side, Uptown, Downtown and South Side areas through Friday. A city official said residents may spray their yards with insecticide using a hose nozzle on trees, shrubs, gardens and landscaped areas only.  KIII-TV
