ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Corpus Christi have surged to $3.76 a gallon today and experts advise drivers to adjust speed and check tires (using cruise control on highways) to boost fuel efficiency. Some local stations report lower rates than the average.  KIII-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in West Nueces County were grateful for the rain that fell during Easter weekend (gauges recorded up to 2.7 inches) despite ongoing drought, and locals hope for more rain to help the parched soil.  KRIS 6 News
  • Sargassum seaweed is washing up on Coastal Bend beaches and more will arrive soon. It helps build sand and support marine life but also clogs marinas and releases a strong odor on hot days (it can cause mild skin irritation).  KRIS 6 News
  • Rain barrel sales surged in Corpus Christi (96 in February and 456 in March) as residents look to save water; barrels are available at City Hall’s Central Cashiering Department and Warehouse 6 on Civitan Drive, Monday through Friday.  KRIS 6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Corpus Christi-Nueces County Public Health District reported that 21 of 32 inspected grocery stores achieved perfect scores while some showed violations like expired items and improper food storage; one Walmart received a score of 89 for issues including food temperature problems.  Caller Times
  • Cardiologists have issued new guidelines for monitoring cholesterol to prevent heart disease, and the American Heart Association (AHA) developed the recommendations. Local providers (including area clinics) are expected to integrate the update soon.  KIII-TV
