  • Ronald McDonald House South Texas broke ground on an expansion on Tuesday — a project that will double capacity to 45 family-style suites on the Driscoll Children's Hospital property to help more families stay near treatment. The old building will be replaced to support this upgrade.  KRIS 6 News
  • Construction is underway at Bob Hall Pier to build a restaurant, concession stand, parking lot + repair the road; crews will begin restaurant work soon and parking lot work will start in 60 days while staff plan to charge admission by the end of May.  KRIS 6 News
  • Salon Envy offers free haircuts for children on the autism spectrum every Wednesday in April as part of Autism Awareness Month at its 5601 SPID location. Spots are limited, so call (3618891102) to book an appointment.  KRIS 6 News

  • A new Olive Garden restaurant is set to join a commercial development in Calallen where construction will begin on June 1 and finish Feb. 5; the 7,828-sqft restaurant will share a 25.34-acre site (vacant since 1995) with Longhorn Steakhouse and Academy Sports and Outdoors.  KRIS 6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Corpus Christi’s 9th annual Birdiest Festival in America will run from Apr. 22 to Apr. 26 at the South Texas Botanical Gardens. The event offers bird enthusiasts field trips, presentations, and special activities during prime spring migration season.  KRIS 6 News
  • Today, the South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center celebrates its 30th anniversary at its Staples Street location. The site has showcased local wildlife and lush exhibits as a community favorite for 30 years.  Caller Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bishop Consolidated Independent School District opened its new $5.9 million student development center Wednesday evening in Bishop. The 51,000 sqft indoor facility with a 70-yard field and 18-foot ceiling fans will serve all district teams for weatherproof practice.  KRIS 6 News
  • TAMUCC theater students practiced stage combat today as part of Communication and Media Month (demonstrating safe fight scene routines on campus). More exercises are scheduled this month to boost their acting skills.  KRIS 6 News
  • Thousands of students compete today in the SkillsUSA event in the Coastal Bend as they build real-world skills and boost local business for hotels + shops.  KIII-TV
  • Data shows 80% of Del Mar College Freedom to Dream tuition waiver students reenrolled after fall, outperforming the college average of 50%. The college is accepting applications for year two until April 30 — it will adjust the program for future fall students so that nonready applicants can receive support.  Caller Times
  • The South Texas Botanical Gardens + Nature Center offers a local outdoor classroom where visitors learn about native wildlife through interactive exhibits. The center provides ongoing educational programs and guided walking tours for curious explorers.  Caller Times
