ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Firefighters fought a blaze on the Southside—responding to a 911 call that reported heavy smoke from a home on the 4500 block of Hebert Lane near Weber and Saratoga Boulevard—and they later found an elderly woman in the garage who was taken to Christus Spohn Shoreline and pronounced dead. - ➤ Chacho's Tacos, a long-time local spot in the little yellow house on Ayers Street since 2001, will close on May 2 after its building was sold to a new owner who plans to tear it down — owner Mary Gutierrez said she and her son are still looking for a new location and may reopen later. KIII-TV
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Today, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals vacated Joe David Padron's capital murder conviction after a judge found that false testimony wrongly linked him to a 2002 double homicide at a Corpus Christi drug house; Padron served 19 years in prison and was released on bail in 2023. KRIS 6 News

- ➤ The U.S.S. Lexington will offer an overnight paranormal event on Friday, May 16 when guests will tour six paranormal hotspots aboard the ship, sleep in former crew quarters and dine where the crew once ate with the event running from 6:00 p.m.—9:00 a.m. Guests will join a morning tour on Saturday, May 17 before the experience ends. - ➤ Fans in Corpus Christi and El Paso celebrated Selena Quintanilla Day on April 16th by attending events, listening to her music, and watching documentaries about the Tejano star. It has been 30 years since Selena was fatally shot on March 31st, and her memory lives on at a Corpus Christi memorial featuring a life-sized bronze statue (sculpted by H.W. Buddy Tatum). - ➤ The Texas House approved a bill on Tuesday that would allow schools to suspend all students—including homeless and early learners—for repeated or significant classroom disruptions and threats. Lawmakers added rules for alternative education programs and imposed stricter classroom management measures—changes aimed at addressing rising post-COVID violence and teacher turnover. Caller Times

- ➤ Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar said residents can buy emergency supplies without sales tax from 12:01 a.m. on April 26 until midnight on April 28, which is expected to save about $2.3 million (state and local sales taxes). Qualifying items include household batteries, fuel containers, flashlights under $75, hurricane shutters, emergency ladders under $300, and portable generators under $3,000 while items like automobile batteries, camping stoves, chainsaws, plywood, extension ladders and tents are not allowed (excluded items).
