ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Camp Mystic has withdrawn its 2026 license application at its Hunt location, canceling plans to reopen after a deadly flash flood in July 2025 that killed 28 people and triggered ongoing investigations.  KRIS 6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The St. James Hotel (1869–1937) served as a social hub at the corner of Chaparral and Lawrence streets and influenced early Corpus Christi growth. The site evolved to host new businesses that reflect the city’s rich history.  The Bend Magazine
  • Dianna Hutts Aston, the award-winning author of nature-inspired children’s books, has returned to coastal Bend to embrace the magic of the ocean and small moments that spark inspiration. Her journey took her from San Miguel de Allende (a celebrated cultural hub) back to Port Aransas where her heart lies.  The Bend Magazine
  • The historic Ritz Theatre is starting restoration work in May — photographers will document its current state and experts will study original colors. A flamenco fundraiser will take place at Bar Under the Sun on May 13 at 6:30 p.m. to support its cultural legacy.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Moody High School partnered with Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi to offer a dual credit program in geospatial engineering and land surveying — the memorandum signed on April 30 gives local students a new pathway to career skills.  Caller Times
  • West Oso ISD faced a $600K budget deficit after a Monday board meeting and planned to reduce about 20 positions while selling unused land (such as the old Skinner Elementary School) to balance the budget; the superintendent confirmed that athletic programs were not at risk amid declining enrollment.  Action 10 News
  • Del Mar College and London ISD will launch the Viking Voyage to Nursing program this fall to help London high school freshmen earn an RN degree — offering direct RN entry, an LVN gateway, or a BSN pathway to address local healthcare needs.  KRIS 6 News

  • Corpus Christi Water's rain barrel program sold out as residents prepared for potential water shortages, and new 55-gallon barrels will be available May 8.  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nueces County declared a local water emergency on April 30 and activated the county's emergency management plan amid reduced water supplies. The county plans to reduce use by following Corpus Christi recommendations for water conservation, using reclaimed water for law enforcement car washes, and repairing leaks at county facilities.  Caller Times
  • The city sold all 500 rain barrels in a few days—new stock of 500 will be available for purchase on Friday, May 8 at City Hall and the Warehouse for $47 plus tax.  KRIS 6 News
