COMMUNITY NEWS
- ➤ Corpus Christi residents see more than 20 white helmets placed at local accident sites as part of the Ghost Helmet Project during Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month to honor motorcyclists lost in fatal crashes. The Gonzalez family, who started the project after losing their son Austin in January 2023, will collect the helmets at the end of May and plan to repeat the campaign next year (aiming to help families heal while raising safety awareness). - ➤ Federal student loan collections are resuming today and the Harbor Bridge ribbon cutting is postponed due to construction issues—city officials also say the City Council will get an update on the inner harbor desalination plant project Tuesday while mosquito spraying takes place across the Coastal Bend this week. The McDonald Library remains closed because of a chiller failure and Buc Days continues with carnival rides starting tonight and events running through Sunday, May 11th. KRIS 6 News
- ➤ At Buc Days, Jared Hollenbeck, the caretaker of the Swifty Swine Pig Racers, hosts a pig racing event where young piglets race for an Oreo cookie prize — drawing large crowds. The races have been a crowd favorite since 2018 and will run daily until May 11. KIII-TV

- ➤ Corpus Christi Police arrested six men over the weekend for reckless driving and burnouts; three suspects drove over 100 mph on Highway 358 while another was cited for doing burnouts on S. Shoreline (one suspect also faced a weapon charge) and all vehicles were impounded. KIII-TV
- ➤ Corpus Christi police arrested three suspects Monday morning after they carjacked 24-year-old Mark Gonzalez at gunpoint near Aventine Apartments, where his car sustained damage and his phone was taken while he was on his way to pick up his son—police later recovered a weapon and the suspects are expected to face multiple felony charges. - ➤ A Corpus Christi teacher was honored on May 5 when Spurs representatives presented the NBA Scholastic Coach of the Year Award at Driscoll Middle School—Zain Glover, now in his 11th year as a teacher and coach, said the award recognizes the importance of teaching teamwork and integrity. - ➤ Whataburger is offering free breakfast for teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week from May 5 to 9, with educators able to claim a complimentary breakfast entrée by showing a valid school ID at participating locations from 5 to 9 a.m. The chain is also awarding 75 educators a $1,000 classroom grant—part of its 75th anniversary celebration. - ➤ Councilman Eric Cantu expressed outrage after learning that euthanized shelter animals are being sent to a landfill because a broken cremation furnace forced officials to rely on the solid waste department — he said residents and animal advocates should attend the public workshop on May 8 as the city faces criticism for its lack of transparency.
