CULTURE NEWS

  • Sevendust and Theory of a Deadman will perform at Concrete Street Pavilion on Saturday, Sept. 12 as part of their Dead/Seven Tour with Return to Dust as special guests; tickets cost $40 (plus fees) and general sales begin Friday, May 8 at 10 a.m. CT with artist presales starting today.  KRIS 6 News
  • A photo gallery shows historic images of storms affecting Corpus Christi, with evidence of damage such as broken signage+flooded streets and roaring waves. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corpus Christi ISD is holding walk-through events in May at seven closing schools to honor their history; events are set on May 7 at Browne, Haas, Martin and Sanders, on May 8 at Travis, and later at Fannin and Kostoryz, with students moving to new schools next year.  Caller Times
  • A Robstown senior overcame bullying and cultural challenges to earn honors during AAPI Heritage Month. Eunsil Eom (who moved from Korea at 7) will join the Navy and use her associate's degree to achieve a higher rank.  Action 10 News
  • Flour Bluff High School’s NJROTC unit won its 18th national championship at the National High School Drill Team Championships held May 2–3 in Daytona Beach. Residents celebrated the victory on May 5 at 4:30 p.m. along Waldron Road leading to the NJROTC Pavilion.  KRIS 6 News
  • On May 5, Menger Elementary Principal Christina Barrera was named a national distinguished principal by the National Association of Elementary School Principals during a ceremony at her school (she was surprised by the news). She will attend a national event in Washington, D.C.  Caller Times

  • Under clear skies tonight, Texans may see up to 50 meteors per hour from the Eta Aquarids meteor shower (bright moon conditions may reduce viewing) as Earth passes through Halley’s Comet debris.  Caller Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT narrowed two proposals for a Padre Island crossing; residents in Sea Pines and Flour Bluff oppose the plan that builds a new bridge through Sea Pines (neighbors favor expanding the existing bridge with a second level).  KRIS 6 News
  • City Council voted on Tuesday to have staff review AXE H2O's proposal for a new desalination plant + some members expressed concerns about details while others supported exploring new water options ahead of the June Inner Harbor vote.  KIII-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sames Dealerships donated $20,000 to fund Driscoll Children's Hospital critical transport team in Corpus Christi through its Test Drive for Smiles partnership — continuing support from last year as every test drive triggers a $10 donation to help transport critically ill children across South Texas.  KRIS 6 News
