CULTURE NEWS

  • Tuftopia opened in October 2024 as a new DIY craft store and community hub in Corpus Christi where customers can work on projects or host private parties; it was founded by Mingzi Wu and Eva Zhung to offer a creative space that stays affordable despite rising tariffs — the shop is located at 5625 Saratoga Boulevard.  KRIS 6 News
  • Robert Francis Prevost was elected as Pope Leo XIV by the College of Cardinals, making him the first American to lead the Catholic Church and sparking celebrations among Corpus Christi Catholics—Bishop Michael Mulvey and others praised his simplicity and Spanish language ability as signs of a fresh, inclusive direction for the church.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corpus Christi Independent School District board members and KRIS 6 previewed the new Hamlin and Lexington Middle School campuses—each featuring a new fine arts facility and gymnasium. School officials said Lexington will host sixth grade orientation later in May while Hamlin aims to finish construction by the end of July so students can start in August.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, City Manager Peter Zanoni ordered Corpus Christi Animal Care Services to stop disposing of euthanized animals in the landfill and instead store them in a freezer until their cremation unit is repaired or storage capacity is reached, at which point animals will be sent to Pet Memorial Center for cremation at a fee of $2,500 each. Councilman Eric Cantu explained that the facility had been using the landfill since February after its 10-year-old unit broke down and repairs are expected the week of June 9 — the city now works on a long-term solution.  KRIS 6 News
  • Emergency response leaders gathered today at day two of the Coastal Bend Hurricane Conference to stress the need for a prompt response and plan coordinated regional efforts & share best practices for future storms.  KIII-TV
  • An assessment of Corpus Christi Animal Care Services reveals serious failures in animal care—poor medical treatment, shelter management, and flawed euthanasia processes—along with a negative workplace culture that has led to inconsistent practices. City officials will review 170 recommendations at a City Council Workshop Thursday to improve operations and accountability.  KRIS 6 News
