  • Petronila families struggled to rebuild after the May 8 windstorm when no federal aid was provided, leaving residents such as Yaxaira Castillo (a single mother) to rely on volunteer efforts while many lost essential belongings. A resource fair will be held Tuesday, May 20 at Petronila Elementary School to assist with damage surveys that documented (199 homes) affected in the area.  KRIS 6 News

  • Bargain shoppers gathered to celebrate the grand opening of a new Ollie's store in Calallen after a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Wednesday—located across from Walmart in the former Big Lots building on U.S. Interstate-69, the discount outlet offers a range of merchandise including books and a rewards program.  KRIS 6 News

  • Police say a copper crime ring stole over $100K from Robstown businesses as officers arrested two alleged accomplices—suspected ringleader Brandon Teder remains at large.  KIII-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A father and son from TAMUCC will graduate together Saturday to honor their late wife's wish after she passed away from cancer last August. John Conyers and his son Jonathon, who enrolled in fall 2021, will share the stage while carrying her urn — a symbol of their promise to keep her memory alive.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City and Del Mar College officials are reviewing tax exemptions for 13 apartment complexes bought by the Corpus Christi Housing Authority because they say the deals could lose up to $7 million in tax revenue and widen a budget gap of up to $10 million. The housing authority says the deals are legal and needed for affordable workforce housing—while new board members have been named to improve oversight.  Caller Times
  • Dorothy Holmes from Flour Bluff received a $500 citation on May 5 for watering her yard during Stage 3 drought restrictions even though she displayed a well water sign, because her well was not registered with the city despite being registered with the state. After she properly registered her well and received an official sign, the citation was waived and city officials plan to improve communication on the registration process.  KRIS 6 News

  • Today at the American Bank Center, the American Heart Association hosted the Go Red for Women luncheon to raise funds and spread awareness about heart disease in women — nearly 44% of women 20 and older live with some form of cardiovascular disease.  KRIS 6 News
