COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A resource center is scheduled to open at Petronila Elementary in Robstown on Tuesday May 20 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. — it will offer Nueces County residents affected by last week’s storms access to state and local assistance, food services, and health support in coordination with Bishop CISD and the city of Petronila.  KIII-TV
  • Students at Freer High School received a strong warning against drinking and driving when local law enforcement staged a mock crash on campus — the demonstration aimed to show the severe consequences of impaired driving as graduation and summer break approach. Sgt. Rob Mallory explained the exercise was designed to help students avoid deadly incidents on the road.  KIII-TV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Sinton man died in a motorcycle crash Saturday morning after troopers pursued him for reckless driving—his Suzuki GSX struck a Nissan Altima, fatally injuring 34-year-old Thomas Dehner III as officials continue their investigation.  KRIS 6 News

  • K Space Contemporary invites local residents to help paint a 600-foot mural celebrating the Coastal Bend behind the Annex Building on South Chaparral Street—volunteers will join sessions next weekend as Downtown Mural Fest begins on June 1.  KIII-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corpus Christi ISD has named four new principals who will take over leadership roles next school year+ they are expected to guide local schools as they begin the academic term.  KIII-TV
  • Hundreds of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi graduates received their degrees at the American Bank Center Saturday, with family members watching as they marked the end of their college journey. One graduate, Geovanny Montemayor (a political science major set to attend Rice University in the fall), said the day felt like a dream realized.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi ISD announced on Monday that four new elementary school principals have been named for Kostoryz Elementary — Dawson Elementary — Oak Park Elementary — and Blanche Moore Elementary as the district prepares for the upcoming school year. They will assume their roles before fall begins.  KIII-TV
  • At Del Mar College’s spring commencement on May 16 at American Bank Center in Corpus Christi, more than 700 students received their degrees—graduates from nursing, liberal arts and accounting programs marked this milestone as families cheered the success.  Caller Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Low water levels at Lake Corpus Christi have raised safety concerns as shallow water and shifting sediment create hazards for swimmers—Texas Park and Wildlife Department and Mathis Water Safety Coalition Task Force plan to install three life jacket stations with over 150 donated jackets placed in mobile boxes following four drownings last year. The life jackets will be available for all ages as summer approaches.  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Law enforcement officers gathered at the fairgrounds in Robstown to train on highway patrolling and smuggling prevention as part of a criminal interdiction academy—Special Agent Nick Jackson led the session. The training is one of several stops in his ongoing circuit across the Southwest.  KIII-TV
