  • Dr. Kesley Banks from Harte Research connects ancient shark history and modern marine science for Shark Week; HRI hosts a watch party at Brewster Street Icehouse at 6 p.m. on July 20 and a community talk at Texas State Aquarium at 11:30 a.m. on July 31 (local events).  The Bend Magazine
  • Sandbox Beach Bar, a new family-friendly venue on Michael J. Ellis Seawall, opened this past spring and offers waterfront access with food trucks + live music, pickleball, volleyball and a playground for kids. It quickly became a local hub for summer fun in Corpus.  The Bend Magazine
  • After her son's drowning at Lake Corpus Christi's Sunrise Beach in June 2024, Michelle Ruiz-Hernandez founded the Chris Ruiz Foundation to push for mandatory life jackets on moving boats and to promote water safety through education, welding scholarships, and hurricane preparedness outreach events coming soon.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi hosts a busy month with a mural fest starting tomorrow, a three-day Comic Con from June 5, a tropical Brunch Club on June 6, community runs every Saturday, and Pride and Juneteenth celebrations through June 29. BUSINESS NEWS

  • SpaceX's Starship flight 12 test on May 22 from Starbase encountered a booster mishap & an uncontrolled landing near the Gulf Coast. The FAA grounded the rocket and will clear it only after its investigation and corrective actions are completed.  Caller Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation will use Solar Shield (a food-grade liquid additive) to cut evaporation at seven public pools and five splash pads starting Saturday, May 30, through August 9. Officials noted last summer the additive saved about 2 million gallons over a period of 70 and 80 days and said they will keep conserving water.  Action 10 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi leaders are considering emergency water conservation measures + mandatory 25% usage cuts if a Level 1 emergency is declared next Tuesday, amid growing drought and ongoing record heat. Residents and industries have already limited water use since 2024 to help stave off shortages.  The Texas Tribune
  • Overnight closures affect southbound IH 37 from US 181 to N. Chaparral Street today from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., and starting Saturday, May 30, entrance ramps from SH 286 and US 181 will be closed until July for road restoration so motorists must follow detour signs.  Action 10 News

  • Magenta Diaz and Tony Colunga restored a 1962 mid-century modern home (originally designed by Joe Williams) by preserving its character and adding curated vintage touches.
