  • Corpus Christi native retired teacher Isabel Castillo toured the Westside neighborhood she grew up in on April 7 as she visited her childhood home, an empty lot where a friend once lived, and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she received her first communion and was married.  Caller Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 17-year-old Port Aransas High School student was killed in a fatal crash Saturday morning—community gathered today for a vigil to honor his memory.  KIII-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • On March 21, Corpus Christi police officers responded to calls for a verbal disturbance, a missing elderly man, and a trespassing incident at a vacant home where they documented blood and arrested a man with a warrant—photos from a ride-along show officers Andrew Flores and Michael Guerrero in action.  Caller Times
  • Officer Vicente Ortiz, a 15-year veteran of Corpus Christi Police Department, was fatally struck while escorting a funeral procession one year ago—he passed away 10 days later—and his family today expressed frustration that the driver has not been charged.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi police arrested eight people for traffic offenses over the past three evenings for speeding, racing and reckless driving—vehicles were impounded at locations including South Padre Island Dr., Hwy 358, Ocean Dr. and Shoreline Blvd.—with some suspects also facing charges for carrying a weapon and resisting arrest.  KRIS 6 News

  • Corpus Christi hosted its first Korean BBQ Festival where local residents enjoyed sizzling grilled meats, spicy kimchi, and authentic Korean dishes. The event celebrated cultural cuisine and featured vendors offering traditional flavors (drawing a large local crowd).  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • County leaders hope the Texas General Land Office will approve a plan to turn sand into asphalt next to the under-construction Bob Hall Pier—if approved, the parking project will move forward.  KIII-TV
  • Nueces County submitted plans to the Texas General Land Office for a new Bob Hall Pier parking lot and road—a project set to improve safety by enabling easier access for first responders and people with disabilities since current access issues have caused delays. Officials said the $1 million project will move forward once approval is received and the pier is set for completion by the end of this year or early next year.  KIII-TV
  • Texas lawmakers passed Senate Bill 15 last weekend, allowing builders more flexibility to construct smaller homes on lots not exceeding 3,000 square feet in new subdivisions in 19 of the state's largest cities (a move aimed at curbing high home prices). Gov. Greg Abbott will review the bill as part of efforts to reduce costs statewide.  The Texas Tribune
