GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Corpus Christi NWS is nearing completion of a project that will restore its weather radio transmitter by the end of June after an eight-month outage caused by relocating equipment (from Wilson Plaza Tower downtown). The new transmitter at a Rockport site will broadcast essential weather alerts during hurricane season. KRIS 6 News
- ➤ Corpus Christi officials face a $7 million budget deficit and are asking residents for input through an online survey available until June 15 — the feedback will guide decisions on fee hikes and program cuts. The City Council will review a proposed budget in July and must adopt a balanced plan before October. Caller Times
- ➤ The Port of Corpus Christi completed the 35-year Ship Channel Improvement Project after seven years of work by deepening its channel from 47 to 54 feet and widening it from 400 to 530 feet along 30 miles. A ribbon cutting with a ship’s horn blast marked the milestone—funded by a $625 million partnership between the federal government and the port—which may soon allow larger crude carriers and container ships. - ➤ Texas lawmakers passed Senate Bill 379 that will bar SNAP beneficiaries from using food stamps to buy sodas and candy—Gov. Abbott is expected to sign the bill soon so that retailers can update the Lone Star card system for compliance before the rule takes effect Sept. 1. Caller Times
- ➤ A bipartisan state bill that passed the senate on June 1 requires warning labels on foods with ingredients not recommended for human consumption by overseas authorities. Gov. Abbott has yet to sign the bill and if it becomes law, manufacturers will begin adding labels on items like chips and sodas starting in 2027 — changes that could affect packaged foods nationwide.
