- ➤ On Saturday, hundreds of community members gathered at the Holiday Inn Downtown for a bingo fundraiser that offered designer handbags from brands like Louis Vuitton, Kate Spade, Coach + Michael Kors to support veterans and first responders affected by toxic burn pit exposure. Proceeds went to Burn Pits 360's assistance programs for medical equipment, bereavement support and wellness treatments. KRIS 6 News
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Pedro Baldonado (a Sinton native) was sentenced to 20 years on June 5 after pleading guilty to manslaughter for the 2013 double homicide in Jim Wells County that claimed the lives of Marissa and Christopher Montes; he is now held at the Jim Wells County Jail and will soon be transferred to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. - ➤ Families gathered Saturday for the NAACP’s Juneteenth Arts and Education Contest at Dr. H. Boyd Hall — young people shared artwork, poems, and songs to honor freedom and the end of slavery. The contest is one of several events the NAACP will host to teach Black history and support youth voices in Corpus Christi. KRIS 6 News

- ➤ Texas public education received an $8.5 billion boost — House Bill 2 signed by Governor Greg Abbott also added $4 billion for teacher raises. In Corpus Christi districts like West Oso ISD, teachers will receive up to $8,000 extra next year as the district plans to allocate funds for non-certified staff and ongoing maintenance. KRIS 6 News

- ➤ The National Weather Service reported dangerous heat will persist from Saturday through Monday before rain chances increase next week — temperatures may reach near 95 with heat indexes above 110 in some areas. - ➤ Corpus Christi firefighters will soon have a new cancer screening program because they face harmful carcinogens while protecting the community—this plan aims to boost early detection and timely care.
