  • Corpus Christi boxing legend Ernesto 'Coach' Hernandez Chavarria Sr. died from complications after gallbladder surgery at 69 as he dedicated his life to offering free boxing training and guidance to local youth. His decades of service as a veteran and mentor at local gyms helped shape character and keep training accessible for kids in need.  KRIS 6 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Corpus Christi Fire Department responded mid-afternoon Wednesday to a fire on the first floor of an apartment at Solana Vista Apartments at 6947 Everhart Road on the Southside — no injuries were reported and no occupants were inside — while investigators work to determine the cause and the Red Cross was notified to assist two adults.  KRIS 6 News

  • Corpus Christi native Stephanie Elizondo Griest, who spent 10 years traveling and writing about women creators, returns to share her sixth book 'Art Above Everything.' She will host book events on June 27 at K-Space Contemporary Art Gallery (6-8 p.m.) and on June 28 at Barnes & Noble (2 p.m.).  The Bend Magazine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Port of Corpus Christi has requested the City Council postpone its review of two rezoning applications for the Northside area to July 15—saying extra time is needed to consult with community members and assess potential effects on nearby Washington-Coles and Hillcrest neighborhoods.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi is closing its nonessential city offices today for Juneteenth—including City Hall, public libraries, Municipal Court, City Call Center, Development Services, and the public health district—while police, fire, airport, and other emergency services continue operating normally. Trash, recycling, brush, and bulky pickup will resume on June 21 and parks, pools, and recreation centers will follow varied schedules.  Caller Times
  • Arlene Medrano has been named Executive Director of the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District after a unanimous board vote. She served as interim director since April and will officially begin on July 1 — her strong municipal background is set to boost downtown revitalization.  KRIS 6 News
  • County road 44 bridge officially opened today as officials held a ribbon cutting ceremony—local engineers said the new structure will ease travel for nearby drivers.  KIII-TV
