ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • SpaceX’s Starship exploded in a fiery blaze during a routine engine test near Boca Chica on June 18 — 180 miles south of Corpus Christi — with no injuries as the company cited a major anomaly while preparing for Flight 10.  Caller Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Corpus Christi City Council is set to review a proposal for TIRZ 7—a tax increment reinvestment zone that would fund infrastructure improvements such as roads, utilities, stormwater management, parks, trails, and public areas on 5,200 acres in the London area.  KRIS 6 News
  • Arlene Medrano was named Executive Director of the Corpus Christi Downtown Management District after a unanimous board vote and served as interim director since April; she will start her role on July 1 — using her city experience to boost downtown feel.  Action 10 News
  • Former U.S. Rep. Blake Farenthold, a Corpus Christi radio host and congressman known for helping secure funding for the port, died this week at 63 from a heart attack caused by chronic liver disease—he served from 2011 to 2018 and resigned amid sexual harassment allegations.  The Texas Tribune
  • The Corpus Christi Housing Authority approved workforce housing deals worth $350 million that may break the Texas Open Meetings Act by not giving clear public notice for 13 apartment complexes bought between July 2024 and March 2025. The deals could take about $7.4 million from local tax rolls each year and help private investors more than local workers—officials have paused further deals for review.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi Water has maintained its Superior Public Water System designation — the 2024 water quality report confirms that local drinking water meets and exceeds all state and federal standards. City officials say the report offers key information for residents monitoring water safety.  KRIS 6 News
  • Port officials requested that the city postpone two rezoning proposals from the June 17 meeting to the July 15 meeting so they could meet with stakeholders in Washington-Coles and Hillcrest. The first proposal would change a residential area to light industrial use while the second would reclassify commercial and multifamily districts to heavy industrial zoning, and city staff said the changes align with the city Comprehensive Plan and will not affect nearby park facilities.  Action 10 News
