CRIME NEWS

  • On Monday, July 14, Corpus Christi police said that near the 7900 block of Elk Dr.—where an armed man fought with a CCPD officer before trying to run over the officer—the officer fired his weapon and the suspect, identified as 47-year-old Hector Rincon, later died at a local hospital while the officer was placed on administrative leave.  Action 10 News
  • A Texas A&M Corpus Christi police officer was arrested Monday night in Alice—he is charged with domestic violence including assault of a pregnant woman, assault causing bodily injury to a family member and interfering with an emergency call.  KRIS 6 News
  • Authorities identified 23-year-old Andres Canes as the victim of a fatal shooting when his body, with a gunshot wound to the head, was found in a park bathroom at Bobby Ray — Opal A. Younts Park on July 10th and investigators have named persons of interest.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tuloso-Midway ISD students are heading back to school today as Superintendent Steve VanMatre explained that new changes will be introduced in public schools after the Texas Legislative session—officials expect policy and curriculum updates soon.  KIII-TV
  • Dozens of sixth and seventh graders showcased their robotics and coding skills at TEX-PREP summer camp at Del Mar Southside Campus today by designing and racing their own robotic cars through obstacle courses. The six-week program, funded by Flint Hills Resources, teaches hands-on engineering skills that could lead to future careers.  KRIS 6 News
  • Nearly 50 local middle schoolers spent their summer break exploring robotics and engineering at TEXPREP — a program that gave them hands-on STEM experience.  KIII-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Drivers in the Coastal Bend can now get a free 5-minute emissions check as part of the AutoCheck program offered by Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi & the Port of Corpus Christi. If a vehicle fails the test, drivers will receive a voucher for up to $600 in repairs that is valid for 60 days.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction has begun on Huntwick Avenue near H-E-B Plus on Saratoga and Staples, with nearly $1 million in repairs that will improve pavement, sidewalks, and drainage, and the work is expected to be completed by November (the current section may finish in about two months). Local businesses such as Classy Nails have reported a sharp decline in customers while Navy Federal and H-E-B say they will keep access available throughout the project.  KRIS 6 News
