CRIME NEWS

  • Corpus Christi police are using a federal grant of over $40,000 to team up with DEA detectives and local partners to fight drug trafficking by seizing counterfeit pill presses and reducing fentanyl cases—Assistant Chief Todd Green said community tips are key to targeting related crimes.  KRIS 6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Felix Fuentes at the Conrad Blucher Institute is developing an AI model that uses real-time sensor data from Oso Creek to forecast compound flooding with up to 6 hours of lead time — he plans to extend this warning to 12, 18, or even 24 hours for public use by spring 2026.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • City officials received an estimate from Kiewit for a planned desalination plant that will cost about $1.1 billion and require a $32 million annual operating budget — they are reviewing the proposal for next steps.  KIII-TV
  • TxDOT will repave and restripe I-37 northbound from the pedestrian bridge near Buddy Lawrence Drive to Nueces Bay Boulevard nightly from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. starting Sunday — drivers must follow detour routes and be alert to work zone conditions.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi will begin a $3.6 million reconstruction project on Bonner Drive from Everhart Road to Flynn Parkway on Monday, July 21 — the work will install new asphalt, curbs, gutters, sidewalks and streetlights, with completion expected in December.  KRIS 6 News
  • Texas lawmakers have passed and signed four bills to boost support for NJROTC programs statewide, doubling the annual scholarship cap from $15,000 to $30,000, guaranteeing in-state tuition, and offering priority class registration for ROTC students. The Flour Bluff NJROTC program, which won its 17th national championship in May, said the new measures—expected to attract more dedicated cadets—will help as school starts on August 13.  KRIS 6 News
  • Utility and street improvements on Taylor Street will begin Monday, July 21, with lane closures between North Lower Broadway Street and North Water Street continuing through October—motorists must follow posted detour signs—to navigate around the work zone. The city will phase the work so that other sections of Taylor Street remain open—allowing one-way traffic during utility improvements and resurfacing—while prioritizing safety.  KRIS 6 News

  • Hundreds of healthcare professionals meet in Corpus Christi at the American Bank Center for the 19th annual Diabetes Conference—hosted by the Coastal Bend Health Education Center to address the region's high diabetes rates.
