CRIME NEWS

  • Jessica Garza pleaded guilty to a 2023 murder on 25th Street and to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon—she accepted a 20-year prison sentence.  KRIS 6 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A Visit Corpus Christi survey found that 81% of local residents believe tourism is vital to the city’s economy and community development. The survey – which collected responses from nearly 2,000 residents – also showed a gap between where locals spend time and where they assume visitors gather.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corpus Christi schools will begin classes in August with CCISD starting on Aug. 11 and other districts following on Aug. 12 and 13. Local events will offer backpacks, supplies, and free health screenings—while officials study new rules to ban student cell phone use during school hours.  Caller Times
  • A team from California delivered 27 pallets of school supplies weighing about 39,800 pounds to HOLT CAT’s warehouse near Greenwood Tuesday morning so that 22,000 students in 43 Coastal Bend public school districts are ready to start the school year. Operation Supply Our Students runs through July 31 — coordinating the donation effort with KRIS Communications and the United Way of the Coastal Bend.  Action 10 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Dr. Kelsey Banks of the Harte Research Institution will speak on shark research and conservation at the Texas State Aquarium on Friday at 11:30 a.m.—she will explain how films like Jaws shaped public views and share insights from years of studying sharks. Her talk, held in front of the H-E-B Caribbean Sea Exhibit, will highlight efforts to track and protect these important predators.  The Bend Magazine

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A forensic audit of Nueces County operations uncovered an elevated fraud risk and $3.75 million in unauthorized transfers not brought before the Commissioners Court yesterday. The review of records from fiscal years 2020 to 2024 linked these issues to the former county auditor—prompting county leaders to call for a possible review by the district attorney.  KRIS 6 News
  • Nueces County approved an expansion that will double RV and tent camping sites at I.B. Magee Park in Port Aransas and Padre Balli Park on Padre Island. Coastal Parks Director Scott Cross—project lead—will send out bids for new roads, utilities, and a pavilion, with construction set to finish by February 2027.  KIII-TV
  • Corpus Christi City Council approved an $11.2 million crime prevention budget today—allocating funds for 78 police officers, nine replacement vehicles, and necessary equipment—and plans to transition 15 officer positions to the General Fund over the next two years.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi approved a $2 million plan to renovate the historic La Retama Library — construction will begin next month and finish by spring 2026. The project will update the building with a new storefront, wall repairs, a mural, and windstorm-rated windows — which may require temporary closures.  KRIS 6 News
