- ➤ A man was critically injured after a fire erupted at an Exxon gas station on South Padre Island Drive on July 29—firefighters and police responded quickly to extinguish flames while EMS transported him, and investigators work to determine the cause. Caller Times
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A civil lawsuit stemming from the November 2 wrong-way crash on Harbor Bridge that killed dispatcher Betsy Mandujano and Navy veteran Mathew Banda and injured Janell Donaho was settled—charges involved former DBE manager Roxanne Palacios, her employer Flatiron-Dragados, and Railroad Seafood—after a company event where reports showed Palacios was intoxicated. - ➤ Corpus Christi ISD welcomed 257 new teachers during orientation at Veterans Memorial High School on July 30—preparing for the new school year that will begin on August 11. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Corpus Christi is opening a new 7,300 sq ft police substation on the Southside to speed up response times and improve community access. Police chief Mike Markle said the facility—approved by voters in Bond 2022 and Bond 2024—will also provide a better work environment for officers and enhance public safety. KRIS 6 News
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Community members in Portland and across the Coastal Bend attended a free health clinic at the Portland Community Center on July 30—offering cholesterol, blood sugar, and mammogram screenings along with reproductive and hearing services to help uninsured residents.
