- ➤ Today at the American Bank Center, Operation Safe Return will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will offer over 4,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and on-site free physicals, organized by the Corpus Christi Police Department (with support from local businesses) to help students prepare for the new school year. - ➤ Today at the Omni Hotel on Shoreline Boulevard the Corpus Christi Police Officers Association Boxing Club holds its annual event to honor fallen officer Albert Leal Jr. — who lost his battle with ALS — as boxers from across Texas compete for a championship ring and raise funds for local support and nonprofits. - ➤ Border Patrol agents seized over 72 pounds of cocaine valued at more than $2.3 million on July 26—agents discovered 30 bundles hidden in an 18-wheeler's ceiling after a K-9 alert and the driver will be presented for prosecution. Action 10 News

- ➤ Texas shoppers will have a chance to save on school supplies and select clothing when the Tax-Free Weekend begins on August 8 and ends on August 10+ Stores will not offer a tax refund for items bought before or after the holiday, and only items sold for less than $100 qualify+. KRIS 6 News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ TxDOT is planning to upgrade US 77 to interstate standards and will host public hearings in August so residents can learn more about the project; the in-person hearings are scheduled for August 20 at the Refugio County Expo Center and August 21 at the Woodsboro School Cafeteria from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. plus a virtual option will start on August 20. - ➤ City officials closed a $7M budget gap by reducing spending and planning fee hikes on services as they fine-tune the revised budget for adoption on September 9 — they are also set to eliminate seven city positions while working to keep affected employees. KIII-TV
