COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, Corpus Christi marks Purple Heart Day to honor veterans who were wounded or killed in combat as recipients like Army veteran Jeremy Holmes share their stories. A ceremony will be held Saturday at 10 a.m.—and later the Corpus Christi Hooks will also honor these service members at the stadium.  KRIS 6 News
  • The Coastal Bend Food Bank has reduced its food distributions to once a month because empty shelves and a surge in demand forced a tough decision this summer — the nonprofit now serves more neighbors and is asking the community to donate nonperishable food and money. The food bank plans a mobile distribution event on Tuesday, August 12 from 7:00 a.m.—9:30 a.m. at 5442 Bear Lane to help meet growing needs.  KIII-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • A Corpus Christi man was sentenced to 96 months in federal prison for aggravated robbery and brandishing a firearm after he robbed two Vape City stores on July 9 and led officers on a 20-mile high-speed chase—his accomplice had earlier been sentenced to 36 months.  Action 10 News
  • A 63-year-old man went missing after kayaking on Tuesday night, and his empty kayak was found on the north side of Nueces Bay near Portland this morning. The US Coast Guard, DPS, Texas Parks and Wildlife Game Wardens, and Corpus Christi Police are searching the bay for him.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Taft Independent School District surprised teachers by giving each a +$150+ shopping spree at +Portland Walmart+ to buy essential supplies for students before the new school year, easing back-to-school expenses.  KRIS 6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado State University’s final forecast released on August 6 shows a slightly above-average Atlantic season with 16 named storms — 8 hurricanes and a 48% chance of a major hurricane making landfall along the U.S. coastline. Texas faces a 67% chance for a storm, a 41% chance for a hurricane, and an 18% chance for a major hurricane tracking within 50 miles.  Caller Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Inmates at the Nueces County Jail annex are learning woodworking and craftsmanship by building planter boxes, birdhouses and porch swings from discarded pallets that are sold on Etsy—money from the sales is reinvested in the program for new tools and supplies. The Sheriff’s Office runs the program to help inmates gain work experience and a path forward once they have served their time.  KIII-TV
