COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Family and friends will participate in a ride along fundraiser in honor of fallen Officer Vicente Ortiz, who died on May 21 after being struck by a vehicle while escorting a funeral procession. The ride starts at Por Vida Academy at 4613 S. Padre Island Drive with registration at 10 a.m. and ends at Nueces Brewing Co. on Water Street — all proceeds will fund a scholarship for a Por Vida Academy student pursuing a career in criminal justice.  KRIS 6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • A Nueces County Grand Jury indicted 21-year-old Eduardo Manuel 'Manny' Hernandez for the July 10 murder of 23-year-old Andres Canas in Agua Dulce — Hernandez was arrested on July 25 at his parent's house by county officers.  KIII-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Some Texas school districts have sued over STAAR tests because they say the tests are not fair and do not show what students really know. Texas House Bill 134, filed on July 21st, would split the STAAR exam into three small tests if passed—lawmakers hope this plan gives teachers more time to teach.  KIII-TV
  • Corpus Christi Independent School District will provide free breakfast and lunch for all enrolled students this year, and parents need only complete a district income form during registration. The income survey helps the district report data needed to secure state grants and support school programs.  KIII-TV
  • The Texas Workforce Commission has awarded JET grants to five local schools including Corpus Christi ISD, Banquete ISD, George West ISD, San Diego ISD, and Del Mar College to boost career training programs in the region. Banquete ISD received $350,000 for nurse training while Corpus Christi ISD got $57,312 for electrician training—each grant is set to improve student skills with updated equipment and training resources.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi ISD promoted Kevin Hendrickson to senior athletic director after serving as assistant since March 2023—he will lead the athletics program when students return on August 11.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi taxpayers will owe at least $231M for the Inner Harbor desal plant even if it is never built — this cost comes from bonds that were already issued. City council must decide by Sept. 5 — declining the $210M funding could lead to penalties and force the city to explore other financing options.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi celebrated its official designation as a Coast Guard City with a ceremony on Friday, August 8 at the Coast Guard facility at Corpus Christi International Airport. City leaders and military personnel gathered to honor the first Texas city given this title—approved by the U.S. Coast Guard Commandant and Congress as part of a 45-year partnership supporting service members and their families.  KRIS 6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Retired Corpus Christi Fire Marshal Randy Paige lost his son to suicide in 2015 and now gives free suicide awareness presentations after 36 years with the department. He travels the Coastal Bend with a 30 minute presentation to help families by sharing his personal story (he does not receive payment and accepts donations for his son's memorial scholarship).  KRIS 6 News
