COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community members are planning to revive the BMX track at Salinas Park with help from a new nonprofit and an interim board. They met on Sunday at Bus Bar Under the Sun to share ideas and plan a low-cost project that will add dirt, bleachers and lights for riders of all ages to race.  KIII-TV
  • Young entrepreneurs in the Coastal Bend donated their Lemonade Day earnings to help Kerrville families hit hard by Hill Country floods + the funds will support ongoing relief efforts. At a Rally Credit Union stand, Emily Rendon said children raised $200 and learned key lessons in business and generosity + the donations highlight a community effort.  KIII-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Roy Blaker, 21, was arrested today for reckless driving and unlawful carrying of a weapon after officers stopped a speeding truck on South Padre Island Drive—and Elijah Garcia, 23, was arrested for reckless driving and controlled substance possession after his vehicle ran a stop sign as part of CCPD’s crackdown on reckless driving.  KRIS 6 News
  • Detectives said a 16-year-old from Corpus Christi was arrested on Monday for a shooting at a teen party on Beauvais Drive on Saturday—he shot a 19-year-old trying to rob him of a gold chain and injured a bystander while already facing multiple charges, and juvenile prosecutors will seek additional charges of aggravated robbery and assault.  KIII-TV
  • The Corpus Christi Police Department arrested seven drivers for dangerous speeding in a street racing incident where one driver was clocked at 129 mph—vehicles were impounded and some drivers were found carrying firearms.  KIII-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carroll High School’s iconic tiger mural was moved to the new campus courtyard just in time for the start of school—its placement linking alumni and current students—Principal Robert Arredondo said.  KIII-TV
  • Hamlin Middle School opened its new campus along South Staples Street today—this 154,000-square-foot facility has 22 classrooms, two gyms, a weight room, and a fine arts wing designed to serve up to 750 students with improved safety and comfort for learning.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nueces County officials said that Senate Bill 9 stalled in Austin may lower the property tax revenue cap from 3.5% to 2.5%—a change that could cost the county about $4 million next year as they prepare to review the proposed budget on Aug. 18 and have reached out to legislators for help.  KIII-TV
  • DPS Sgt. Rob Mallory appeared on Domingo Live today to remind Corpus Christi residents to follow road rules and use safety tips for the back-to-school season — his visit focused on keeping drivers and students safe as the new school term approaches.  KIII-TV
