BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Halloween opened last Saturday at the former Joann's Fabric Store on SPID & South Staples in Corpus Christi and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The seasonal retailer has sold out of key Halloween items and is planning a new store at Conn's on SPID in the near future.  KRIS 6 News

CRIME NEWS

  • Law enforcement is seeking fugitive Robert Earl Hodge—wanted for parole violation and aggravated robbery—after he was last seen in Annaville on August 13 fleeing in the midst of an assault, with officials reporting he may be on foot or using public transportation.  KIII-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corpus Christi ISD earned a B accountability rating from the Texas Education Agency for the 2024-2025 school year with an overall score of 81; nine schools earned an A rating and nearly double the distinction designations from last year. District officials said they are now working to support 14 C-rated and 2 D-rated campuses—improvements made despite changes in state testing.  KRIS 6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Invest 98L was forecast to become a tropical depression on Friday and may have brought heavy rain to southern Texas as it moved inland—its chance to develop remained low. Tropical Storm Erin formed yesterday and is set to strengthen to a major hurricane by Sunday—posing dangerous rip currents along the East Coast while leaving Corpus Christi untouched.  Caller Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Corpus Christi Army Depot will cut jobs by eliminating 200 defense contractor and about 200 federal employee roles by September 30, a move union officials warn may weaken military readiness and impact the local economy—further reductions could strain the depot's repair capacity and local businesses.  KRIS 6 News
  • Nueces County is moving forward with plans to build a state veterans nursing home in the Coastal Bend to serve local veterans—officials have secured full support from local, federal, and state leaders as the county reviews three possible sites, including one by the Richard Borchard Fairgrounds in Robstown. The county must secure 25 acres near a V-A Clinic before sending the property for approval, with a $35-million project expected to take three years once construction begins.  KRIS 6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Medicaid cuts started last month under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and will require most adults to complete 80 hours of work, volunteering or school each month to keep their coverage—though the changes won't take effect for a couple of years. Local mom Melanie Sandoval worries that middle-class families may struggle with high out-of-pocket costs and notes that local nonprofits are stepping in to offer health services.  Action 10 News
