CRIME NEWS

  • Joe David Padron awaits a decision on a retrial for the 2002 double murder after spending nearly 23 years in prison. His legal team is urging prosecutors to finish their review quickly— a status hearing is set for September 23.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi Police and school district officers responded to a report of a weapon at Roy Miller High School on Thursday and, after a thorough search, found no armed individual— the campus has been declared safe.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi police arrested 33-year-old Ernesto Mondragon today around 6:20 p.m. after he allegedly shot two people along Ayers and Arlington—sending both to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  KIII-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, Port of Corpus Christi CEO Kent Britton told Mike Gillaspia that the port will expand its operations and invest in new infrastructure to support local trade. The plan is expected to boost job opportunities and grow the city's economy—efforts aimed at strengthening the port's future role.  KIII-TV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corpus Christi ISD now holds school board meetings at 5 p.m. after a new Texas law required meetings to be scheduled outside typical work hours—allowing more public comment at each session. The next meeting is on Aug. 25 at 801 Leopard St., where the board will also discuss 2025 accountability ratings and set the tax rate.  Caller Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi planned to tap the Evangeline Aquifer in San Patricio County to pump up to 24 million gallons per day for its water supply while Sinton officials opposed the project—citing concerns about water availability, subsidence, and insufficient studies. City staff worked on permit agreements and contract details following meetings on Aug. 19 and Aug. 20, and Sinton’s city manager warned that a quick fix for water needs might lead to long-term problems for his community.  Caller Times
  • Corpus Christi Water COO Drew Molly resigned last night for reasons that remain unclear—Mayor Guajardo confirmed his final day is September 3 and an interim COO will be named as a search for a permanent replacement begins.  KIII-TV
  • Drew Molly, Corpus Christi Water's Chief Operating Officer, resigned yesterday and will work until September 3 as the council faces tough decisions after halting its inner harbor seawater desalination project—leaving a leadership gap during pivotal water supply talks.  KRIS 6 News
