COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Corpus Christi Animal Care Services will extend its adoption hours beginning Monday, September 1—from 12:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday—to give local residents more time to meet available pets.  KRIS 6 News
  • On September 13, a fishing tournament called Hooks of Hope will take place at 4226 Laguna Shores Road in Corpus Christi to raise money for foster kids through Nate’s Next Kid Up—partnering with R&K Coastal Outfitters. The event charges $400 per team and will help fund school supplies, toys, and trips for 200 foster kids to see the Astros game and visit the Houston NASA center.  KRIS 6 News

  • A Hurricane Harvey survivor recounted his experience on the eight-year anniversary—he chose not to evacuate when the Category 4 storm hit and faced dangerous floodwaters.  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Sinton leaders and residents expressed concern over an $840 million Evangeline groundwater project after Corpus Christi approved a $169 million draft agreement on August 18—residents worry that the project may lead to higher water prices and impact the aquifer. Sinton City Manager John Hobson said the city was not included in early talks and stressed that unchecked water pumping could harm local supplies.  KRIS 6 News
  • On Monday, the Texas House approved a bill that will limit how much city and county property tax revenue can grow by lowering the cap from 3.5% to 1% while exempting public safety spending—helping cities and counties keep funds for police and fire services. The measure now applies to every city and county, passed by an 81-55 vote, and will return for another vote before reaching the Senate for final review.  The Texas Tribune
  • Corpus Christi Housing Authority CEO Gary Allsup is under investigation for approving $350M in workforce housing deals between July 2024 and March 2025 without proper public notice—an act that may breach state law and local bylaws. The board hired an outside attorney in July to review the deals and his compensation.  KRIS 6 News
