CRIME NEWS

  • Officials said a phishing scam targeted the Nueces County Courthouse, increasing losses from $58,000 to $2 million, + the county has halted wire transfers and switched to paper checks while investigators work to recover funds.  Caller Times

  • Five local artists have spent years shaping the Coastal Bend creative scene in Corpus Christi and are now sharing their work through painting, multimedia, and sculpture—showing unique talents that highlight the area's vibrant art community. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students and faculty at Texas A M University—Corpus Christi signed a steel beam Tuesday in a ceremony that marked a key milestone in building the new arts and media building, which will open by summer to expand academic programs and offer a venue for community cultural events.  KRIS 6 News
  • On Aug. 27, Robert Driscoll Middle School held a ribbon cutting ceremony for its new gym—approved by the 2022 bond election—that will help the volleyball and basketball teams schedule practice more efficiently.  KRIS 6 News
  • Del Mar College's Board of Regents approved the 2025-26 budget on August 26 that includes the Freedom to Dream tuition waiver for eligible full-time students and a 3.5% raise for faculty and staff—this balanced plan raises the tax rate slightly from about $0.26 to $0.276 per $100 of taxable value while supporting record enrollment growth.  Caller Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, Nueces County officials reported a potential cyber incident that cost about $2 million, so they froze wire transfers, switched to paper payments, and started a law enforcement probe (with federal assistance expected) to recover funds and hold those responsible accountable.  KRIS 6 News
  • Texas lawmakers advanced a bill to lower the property tax revenue cap from 3.5% to 1%—a move that could hurt budgets in Nueces County and will need Gov. Greg Abbott's approval once lawmakers agree on the final rate.  KRIS 6 News
  • Nueces County has renewed its public defense program to provide fair legal representation and mental health support for those accused of crimes. Starting October first, the county will pay 20% of expenses while the state funds the rest—nine salaried attorneys and extra support services now help manage the workload.  Action 10 News
