COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Community Shop in Rockport became a nonprofit—after 40 years of service—and now operates in its own location—relying on volunteer help—to return net proceeds to local charities.  KRIS 6 News
  • Friends and family will honor Jarvis 'Mike' Smith Jr. at a Sept. 10 celebration of life—he was an iconic KOPY radio announcer and key Alice community leader.  KIII-TV
  • The Coastal Bend Labor Council held its 76th annual Labor Day breakfast at Holiday Inn Airport this morning to honor blue-collar workers as keynote speaker Gina Benavides, a retired justice from the 13th Court of Appeals, said workers built America but still face wage and safety struggles.  Action 10 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Corpus Christi firefighters quickly contained a blaze Monday morning when two dump trucks caught fire near Ahern and North Bluntzer Street—crews arrived around 10 a.m. and kept the fire from spreading to nearby homes as the cause remains under investigation.  KIII-TV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Padre Island restaurants had a busy summer with full dining rooms and long lines serving local residents and tourists—after last year’s storm setback, businesses like Surfside Sandwich Shoppe and Guajillos are hopeful they will carry that momentum into fall.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On September 1, Texas lawmakers enacted 835 new laws that impact public schools, law enforcement and water infrastructure — including measures that expand parental rights in education and adjust regulations for medical marijuana and criminal penalties like those for jugging — setting new standards for state policy.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi city council is voting today on Amendment Number 5 for the $1.2B Inner Harbor desalination project's contract with Kiewit—this decision will shape the city's future water projects. Council member Sylvia Campos, who opposes the project, plans to vote no.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi City Council will review changes to water, wastewater, stormwater fees and property tax details on Sept. 2—these adjustments may raise bills for residents and businesses starting in January as the council works to address drought costs and legacy debts. The council will hold a second vote on Sept. 9 and allow public comments as part of the proposed $1.2 billion operating budget process.  Caller Times
