COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Vietnam-era Bell Huey helicopter was installed yesterday at Sherrill Park on Shoreline Boulevard and Coopers Alley to honor our armed forces and veterans. The project began over three years ago with the chopper donated by Bell Helicopter Corporation and a 15-foot pedestal funded by a city bond project — Nueces County Commissioner Mike Pusley said he felt proud to see the tribute come to fruition.  KRIS 6 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • The Corpus Christi Police Department said a cement truck crashed on Flour Bluff Drive near Yorktown Blvd on Tuesday morning—killing 24-year-old driver Christian Moreno and closing the road from Ramfield Rd to Yorktown Blvd until 7 p.m. while investigators work the scene.  KRIS 6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • At Home, a furniture and home decor retailer based in Coppell, is closing 29 underperforming stores—one of which is at 4949 Greenwood Drive in Corpus Christi—by Sept. 30 due to a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing that cited rising interest rates, persistent inflation, and increased customs costs. The decision follows the closing of six stores over the past year as market pressures worsened.  Caller Times

CRIME NEWS

  • Corpus Christi police said a cement truck rolled over on Flour Bluff Dr.—killing the driver and stating that the cause of the crash remains under investigation.  KIII-TV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy’s survey of 295 Corpus Christi stations showed gas prices averaged $2.54 per gallon on Sept. 1 after falling 14.4 cents in one week, with prices down 20.3 cents compared to last year. The drop is linked to the end of the summer driving season and mirrors decreases seen in the Rio Grande Valley — where similar trends were reported.  Caller Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • TxDOT halted construction on a $64 million ferry upgrade in Port Aransas after workers spotted an endangered West Indian manatee near the ferry site— the animal was seen for several hours before swimming west toward Corpus Christi Bay and work resumed.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi Council voted down a $1.2 billion desalination plant for the Inner Harbor on Wednesday after hours of heated debate and multiple arrests—halting the project and prompting council members to ask the state to shift SWIFT funds to other water initiatives.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi City Council approved the $1.6 billion operating and capital budgets today, which will fund daily services and major infrastructure upgrades (the final vote is scheduled for next Tuesday).  KRIS 6 News

SPORTS NEWS

  • Two local athletes, Rusty and his son Charlie, were chosen as one of 11 U.S. duo teams and are training hard on Harbor Bridge to prepare for the NYC Marathon on November 2. They are also hosting fundraisers—such as a cookie and lemonade sale this Saturday and a barbecue on October 4—to help cover their journey costs.  KRIS 6 News
