COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Ark Assessment Center and Emergency Shelter for Youth has spent 25 years caring for over 4,000 children in need across the Coastal Bend—board president Sister Milagros Tormo said the center’s mission remains to help children overcome abuse. The center will mark this anniversary with a gala on Sept. 18 at the Borchard Fairgrounds.  Action 10 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • An elderly man was hit by a car on the 2700 block of Ruth Ave yesterday morning and taken to a local hospital; traffic investigators say the driver — blinded by the sun — was not given a ticket because the man was not on a marked crosswalk, and his injuries were only road rash.  KRIS 6 News
  • An early morning fire on Daytona Drive destroyed the back of a home and caused no injuries—Corpus Christi Fire Department remains on scene to ensure the fire does not spread to nearby houses.  KIII-TV
  • An early morning fire on Dayton Drive destroyed the back of a home—no injuries were reported.  KIII-TV

CRIME NEWS

  • Three people were arrested at Tuesday's city council meeting for disorderly conduct during a heated debate over cuts to programs, with former mayoral candidate Dr. Isabel Araiza taken into custody+her charges were later dropped+ as officials urge calm discussion in future meetings.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Texas A and M University Corpus Christi has asked the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to approve two-year associate degree programs as off-ramps for students who pause their bachelor's studies. The new programs aim to give these students a credential that can help boost their job prospects while they work to finish their degree.  Caller Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nueces County Sheriff’s Office has expanded its woodshop program by selling handmade inmate items on Etsy. Inmates turn scrap wood from discarded pallets into planters, benches and wall art, and proceeds fund tools and supplies to help build job skills—customers pick up items at the McKenzie Annex on N Padre Island Drive.  KRIS 6 News
  • TxDOT reported that the old Harbor Bridge closed Wednesday mid-afternoon for pedestrians and traffic while a new northbound ramp—linking US 181 to Beach Avenue and the Shared-Use Path entrance—opened today to improve access to North Beach.  KIII-TV
  • Corpus Christi City Council canceled its seawater desalination plant contract on Wednesday after rising costs and delays threatened the water supply amid persistent drought conditions. The city will explore other water options such as groundwater import and wastewater recycling as it seeks a reliable supply for industry and residents.  The Texas Tribune
