COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Purple Door is hosting its 2nd pickleball tournament on September 27 in Corpus Christi to raise awareness for domestic violence prevention — over 100 players are registered and registration closes on September 23. Tournament play begins at 9 a.m. with mixed doubles at 11:30 a.m. at the Al Kruse Tennis and Pickleball Center, and proceeds will support The Purple Door.  KIII-TV
  • Community members, alumni and educators gathered Friday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Solomon Coles High School — a landmark that offered education to African American students during segregation. The school, which closed in 1967, is remembered for its enduring legacy and historic sports feats.  KRIS 6 News
  • The third annual Smoke on the Water festival will take place on September 26 and 27 at the Shrimporee Grounds in Aransas Pass—featuring barbecue, live music, and family activities to support veterans and first responders. Marine Corps veteran Douglas Gresenz, founder of the Redford Ranch Foundation, is planning to build a new wellness center that will expand that support.  KRIS 6 News
  • At Whataburger Field, first responders and locals gathered to honor nearly 3000 lives lost on 9/11 during the 6th annual memorial workout event.   • This weekend in Corpus Christi offers free events like the Home and Garden Show at the American Bank Center, the Corpus Christi LEGO Club Meetup today from noon to 1 p.m.—and Free Video Game Day at Tronix starting at 10 a.m. On Sunday, families can join free art workshops at the Garcia Arts and Education Center and attend the Cultura Couture Fashion Show at 6181 Saratoga Blvd with VIP admission beginning at 11:30 a.m.  KRIS 6 News

  • Made in Corpus Christi, a local brand that has showcased more than 30 artisans for four years, is for sale after its founder Nikki Riojas moved out of the area. Riojas seeks a Corpus Christi resident to take over its online operations, inventory, over 20,000 social media contacts, and local vendor partnerships — ensuring the legacy of local creativity continues.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A new Texas law requires public schools to get written consent from parents before providing full health care services to students, and school nurses and staff have faced confusion since the change began on Sept. 1—local districts are now updating guidance on Senate Bill 12 and explaining the difference between health care and health-related services to parents. The updated measures include protocols for both physical and mental health services to ensure students receive timely care.  KIII-TV

  • The National Hurricane Center is tracking a tropical wave off Africa that could form into a tropical depression by mid next week as it moves west-northwest. Forecasters warn that Texas is not under threat now—conditions are expected to become more favorable for storm formation later in the season.  Caller Times

  • Mayor Paulette Guajardo ordered new safety steps at City Hall after arrests and threats, adding more police and exploring possible metal detectors to increase security.  KIII-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Narcan vending machine was installed outside STSARS at 907 Antelope Street to provide free, 24/7 access to life-saving nasal spray for opioid overdoses—neighbors report that many doses have already been taken and each person may take two doses with clear instructions provided. This new resource is part of local efforts to improve emergency response and reduce overdose deaths.  KRIS 6 News
  • A Corpus Christi family shared its painful story during Suicide Prevention Awareness Month after Arthur Salazar Jr lost his son to suicide this month—his son, who lit up every room, was deeply missed by his surviving brother who said learning the news right after his first college class was devastating. The family urges others to seek help early so that no other family endures the same loss.  KRIS 6 News
