  • A Sinton mom who lost her home in the Welder Fire turned a small animal rescue into a nonprofit that now saves hundreds of stray dogs—helping many pets find a safe place. Sinton Animal Friends earned its nonprofit status recently and will continue to care for animals in the community.  KIII-TV

  • A candlelight vigil was held for 50-year-old Melinda Garcia—honored with released balloons—as a tribute after a fatal Weber crash claimed her life and that of Rene Govea.  KIII-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Mathis is facing a severe drought that could leave Lake Corpus Christi too low to pump water by late December, according to City Manager Cedric Davis. The city will fast-track two new wells—expected to pump over one million gallons a day—to keep local taps flowing.  KIII-TV

  • The Corpus Christi Housing Authority board voted 4 to 1 to fire CEO John Allsup after secret apartment deals cost the city millions in lost tax revenue — the decision follows an internal review of management practices.  KIII-TV
  • The Corpus Christi Housing Authority board terminated CEO Gary Allsup effective immediately after an investigation revealed potential state law violations in $350 million workforce housing deals—actions that led Nueces County Commissioners to authorize immediate legal action and the appointment of CFO Rhen Bass as interim CEO.  KRIS 6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • After a 10-year break, the Coastal Bend Blood Center will revive its Run for Blood fundraiser on October 11 at Water’s Edge Park at 7:30 a.m.—the only annual event supporting its role as the region's sole blood supplier for local hospitals.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi now has its first Narcan vending machine outside South Texas Substance Abuse Recovery Services at 907 Antelope Street that gives free Narcan nasal spray 24/7 to reverse opioid overdoses.   • During Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, a Corpus Christi family shares the story of their 9-year-old daughter who lost her battle to aggressive acute myeloid leukemia to help parents spot early cancer signs—her family continues to honor her memory with a Facebook page aimed at awareness.  KRIS 6 News
