  • Today the popular Kiko's Mexican Restaurant on Everhart Road has a new owner who is committed to preserving the beloved recipes and traditions—ensuring the restaurant keeps its familiar local charm. Bret Wenzel and his wife, who have made Corpus Christi their permanent home, said they will maintain the authentic cuisine and atmosphere that make the eatery a City favorite.  KRIS 6 News
  • Leaders and family members honored Dr. Hector P. Garcia today at a special luncheon at Del Mar College—recognizing his impact on civil rights, the GI Forum and education.  KIII-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi unveiled an exhibit honoring Dr. Hector P. Garcia on Sept. 17 at its renovated downtown building—233 N. Chaparral St.—which displays his medal, desk, archival footage and personal papers. The art gallery highlights his improvements in civil rights and medicine through panels and a mural that present his lasting legacy.  Caller Times
  • The USS Lexington Museum will hold a Top Gun movie night with a 1980s theme on its historic flight deck on Saturday, September 20 — guests can wear Maverick outfits and take photos next to a real F-14 Tomcat. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., food will be sold, and tickets cost $25 for general admission and $20 for military and museum members.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Tuloso-Midway Education Foundation celebrated 20 years by awarding 426 grants totaling over $1 million to support local schools—staff, students, and community members gathered this week to mark the milestone. Executive Director Nikki Horman said the grants filled tight budget gaps so students could enjoy hands-on, creative learning.  KRIS 6 News
  • Seven Corpus Christi students were named National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation — a program that recognizes high PSAT scores and names less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. The semifinalists from four public school districts and one private campus will be notified in February if they advance to finalist status.  Caller Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • City leaders said new wells west of Calallen will be developed along the Nueces River and could pump 30M gallons a day as Corpus Christi combats drought and low lake levels—this plan aims to secure the city’s future water supply.  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi leaders installed metal detectors outside council chambers at City Hall after tense meetings and rising concerns about political violence + officials said the upgrade will help secure future meetings.  KIII-TV
  • Corpus Christi and local county leaders launched the Regional Reverse Alert System to cover Nueces, Aransas, San Patricio, and Refugio—residents can sign up to receive alerts by email, text, or phone.  KRIS 6 News
  • Congressman Michael Cloud said the House passed a defense bill with changes to help the Corpus Christi Army Depot. The Senate will review a bill that offers debt relief, $60 million for a powertrain facility and help to keep Coast Guard aircraft in service—steps that may protect local jobs.  KRIS 6 News
  • Nueces County approved a higher property tax rate on Sept. 10 to support a 10% cost-of-living raise for county employees. The new rate will raise the average homestead tax bill from $538.81 to $621.39 and is expected to generate over $125.9 million in revenue, while the Hospital District tax rate was set at $0.089495 per $100 valuation.  Caller Times

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Corpus Christi family is raising awareness about pediatric leukemia during Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month as they remember 9-year-old Neveyah Reyes, who died of acute myeloid leukemia in December 2019—her story is shared on a Facebook page to help parents recognize early warning signs. They hope that by sharing her journey, other families will learn to act quickly if similar symptoms appear.  Action 10 News

  • Corpus Christi Football Club leaders are preparing for the city’s first professional soccer team and are building a new sports complex on Old Brownsville Rd. They say the game brings families together—its heritage offers local youth real opportunities to learn and grow.  KRIS 6 News
