COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Charles W. Crossley Elementary School has been empty since 2001 on Corpus Christi’s Northside and now faces a 45-day demolition notice after fires in 2013 and 2022 damaged its structure. Pastor Freddy Naranjo—owner of the Tabernacle of Praise Church which bought the site in 2012—is seeking an investor to help cover rising demolition costs as neighbors hope the building is repurposed into a library or community center.  KRIS 6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has opened a Dr. Hector P. Garcia exhibit in downtown Corpus Christi. The exhibit—highlighting the legacy of Dr. Garcia in medicine and civil rights—is open for local visitors.  Caller Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Del Mar College and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi have proposed a joint architecture degree program for Coastal Bend students that may start soon—offering a new pathway in South Texas schooling.  KIII-TV
  • Alice ISD security guard Joe Nino, a 24-year veteran who patrols William Adams Middle School, works each day to protect students and staff by monitoring cameras and checking doors to ensure safety. His lifelong commitment—recognized during National Security Guard Week—has earned him trust from many students who feel secure with his presence.  KRIS 6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • TAMU-CC Harte Research Institute launched the Bringing Baffin Back program to improve water quality in Baffin Bay with nature-based solutions and local input—residents learned about four new stormwater and green space designs at a free community event held Thursday.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi is seeking its next film & music commissioner as the state film incentive program boosts the industry with $500M for new projects after Lydia Garza left her role this fall. The new leader will need deep knowledge of local assets to attract film productions that support our local economy.  KRIS 6 News
  • City Manager Peter Zanoni said he warned some council members about an altered FEMA screenshot used to support a $2M hotel incentive at Homewood Suites—but his warning was vague amid conflicting statements from Mayor Paulette Guajardo. The council has hired outside counsel and faces a petition for removal as depositions and staff emails reveal deep concern over the project.  KRIS 6 News
  • San Patricio leaders are holding a public meeting to plan for the Evangeline Water War as Corpus Christi will pump 24 million gallons a day + officials review strategies.  KIII-TV
  • Women incarcerated at Nueces County Jail can enroll in a culinary training program to earn a certification—teaching food handling techniques that will help them secure employment after release.  Caller Times
  • Texas election officials tested voting systems today at the Nueces County Elections Office to check that votes for 17 proposed constitutional amendments and local races will be counted accurately. Early voting will start on Oct. 20 while Election Day is scheduled for Nov. 4+ volunteers cast ballots in a mock election to compare results with expected outcomes.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi residents and students can tour the Texas DPS Crime Laboratory during National Forensic Science Week from September 14 through 20—where a mock crime scene and evidence testing lab show how drug analysis and DNA testing work.  KRIS 6 News

  • One Shoreline Plaza in downtown Corpus Christi will face a foreclosure auction on Oct. 7 at 10 a.m. at the Nueces County Courthouse—Wilmington Trust will conduct the sale after the borrower defaulted on its loan.  Caller Times
