  • The Coastal Bend Food Bank unveiled a new mobile unit today to bring nutritional education and weekend meals to food-insecure children in rural schools. The unit was donated through a partnership with 1Point5 USA — boosting the Kids Backpack Program to deliver healthy foods to families.  KRIS 6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Corpus Christi City Council approved $2M Type B funding for a $34M Marriott resort on Padre Island Seawall to fill a local gap in higher-quality hotel rooms—construction is set to begin in the third quarter with a two-year completion target and 73 jobs expected to be created. This dual-branded project will combine a Courtyard by Marriott and a Residence Inn with a conference center and dining facilities.  KRIS 6 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Guajillos on the Island honors Mexico’s heritage by serving authentic dishes made with recipes passed down for 500 years—differing from the typical Tex-Mex fare in Corpus Christi. Co-owners Fernando and Andres Rosas run the family restaurant at 15037 South Padre Island Dr, offering posole, chilaquiles, and birria as part of Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi Cathedral is undergoing a $13.6 million renovation that upgrades its interior and exterior with new furnishings, a chapel, and a community center—efforts that will refresh the historic space for local worship and community events.  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi City Council honored longtime broadcaster Rudy Treviño on Sept. 15 by proclaiming it Rudy Treviño Day—recognizing his decades of service.  KIII-TV
  • Corpus Christi approved a $12.5M reconstruction to rebuild Starlite Lane from Violet Road to Leopard Street in the Annaville area—new concrete pavement, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, ADA ramps, streetlights and drainage improvements are planned. Construction will begin in October and finish in January 2027.  KRIS 6 News
  • The Corpus Christi City Council approved a nonbinding terms sheet and nearly $1 million for services on Sept. 23 to help secure groundwater rights from San Patricio County. If finalized, the project will deliver up to 24 million gallons per day from a 23,000-acre wellfield near Sinton—officials say costs and timelines are still under review.  Caller Times
  • The San Patricio Municipal Water District asked Corpus Christi to transfer permits for the La Quinta desalination plant as it seeks to secure more control over local water supply. City leaders will review the request and decide next steps—water remains a critical issue in the Coastal Bend.  KIII-TV
  • Congressman Vicente Gonzalez said solving South Texas water shortage will require billions in federal support—he added that a state measure could unlock $1B yearly.  KIII-TV
  • Corpus Christi leaders approved over $1.1 million in Type B Corporation funding for eight small business programs that will offer training, mentorship, internships and financial aid starting in January and support over 97% of local businesses. The programs also will help women, minority and veteran-owned firms—promising more local opportunities for growth.  KRIS 6 News
