COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Families walking to Rose Shaw Elementary face safety concerns as a vacant lot on Nogales Street forces them into the street—overgrown grass blocks the sidewalk and trash litters the area. Code enforcement inspected the lot 17 times since March 2024 and cleared it four times since August 2024 while a new work order is set to be expedited.  KRIS 6 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Emergency crews from multiple agencies are working to contain a large grass fire on southbound US-77 near the I-69 interchange in southern San Patricio County—roads have been blocked due to heavy smoke reducing visibility—and motorists are urged to slow down and seek alternate routes.  KRIS 6 News

  • Cindy Barrera has been named the HER 2025 Industry Leader. She is the Vice President of Business Development at Frost Wealth Advisors — as well as Chair of the United Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce — and brings over 26 years of experience along with a strong commitment to community service.  The Bend Magazine

CULTURE NEWS

  • Avery Durrill Reny was named HER 2025 Rising Star and now works with Durrill Properties, building on her family legacy at local venues like Concrete Street Amphitheater—she serves on the Downtown Management District board and co-chaired a major art event to boost Corpus Christi’s cultural scene.  The Bend Magazine
  • South Texas Botanical Gardens will host its 17th annual Moonlight and Mariposas in the Gardens fundraiser on October 10 from 6:00 to 9:30 p.m. at 8545 S. Staples—featuring dining, dancing, silent auctions, and live shows by Clarissa Serna and Trey Armijo—as the gardens aim to raise at least $225,000 to support operations and future improvements. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local educator Thea Cain, a former Corpus Christi NAACP Vice President, is named HER 2025 Legacy for promoting Black history and cultural pride. Returning to Corpus Christi in 2015, she leads programs at Carroll High School and NAACP youth initiatives—continuing her mother's community service legacy.  The Bend Magazine
  • Dr. Amy Mintz has been named HER 2025 Humanitarian and now leads the Child Development/Early Childhood Program at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi. She develops new courses and supports local organizations to improve early childhood education for local families.  The Bend Magazine

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Rare pink meanie jellyfish that can weigh up to 50 pounds have been drawing attention along the Texas Gulf Coast from Port Aransas to Corpus Christi. Researcher Jace Tunnell said the bloom is linked to an increase in their food source and visitors should keep a safe distance — vinegar is advised for stings.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi City Council will hear desalination proposals Friday—among them a new offer from the Gulf Coast Authority that aims to secure the city's water future.  KIII-TV
  • Developer Flatiron/Dragados reviewed safety measures on Harbor Bridge after a man climbed a suspension cable on Sept. 24 – police and fire officials rescued him using an aerial ladder. Flatiron/Dragados and TxDOT will add more barriers to prevent future breaches.  Caller Times
  • Everhart Road closed at 9 p.m. on September 29th for concrete work and water line installation from Mt. Vernon Drive to Lamont Street — detour signs were posted to guide motorists — and the road reopened at 6 a.m. on September 30th.  KRIS 6 News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new effort at Driscoll Children's Hospital and Texas A&M is bringing clinical trials closer to local Hispanic families in South Texas for treatments of conditions like diabetes, obesity — asthma, addressing decades of underrepresentation in medical research. The program prioritizes safety with full informed consent from both parents and children and offers access to life-changing treatment options.  KRIS 6 News
  • Amistad clinic pharmacy will open next year — it will use the federal 340B program to help low-income patients access affordable medicine.  KIII-TV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Robstown broke into the top five for the first time in this week’s large school poll of the Friday Night Sports Blitz rankings; they will travel to Carrizo Springs Friday to challenge the Pickers, who will try to keep their unbeaten record. Sinton and Calallen will face off in a key matchup while small school teams prepare for the Blitz game of the week—Orange Grove will play West Oso at 7 PM.  KIII-TV
