  • A new rescue group in Corpus Christi is working to lower the stray animal population by teaching people about pet care and organizing programs to find animals safe, lasting homes—its approach uses education and compassion to build a better community.  KIII-TV
  • KRIS 6 investigative reporter Lea Zora Scruggs was named a 2026 Chauncey Bailey Fellow to study a possible link between industrial pollution and severe birth defects in South Texas—she will receive over $7,000 in training, mentorship and support for her investigation. The yearlong award will help her build on her past Emmy-winning work as she explores this critical public health concern.  KRIS 6 News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Corpus Christi saw an increase in pedestrian deaths in 2024 to 11 from 8 in 2023—TxDOT raised safety awareness by deploying walking billboards at key intersections and urging drivers and pedestrians to stay alert as October proved the deadliest month for foot traffic.  KRIS 6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A Coastal Bend native launched a booming salsa business that celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with tradition and a focus on success — the venture is growing and sharing local flavors with residents.  KIII-TV
  • Local food vendors in Corpus Christi can apply for a pilot program that lets them run a concession stand at the Hilliard Center—this initiative partners with OVG Hospitality to provide training on operations, food safety, and marketing support. Applications remain open until November 1 and the program will begin in spring.  KRIS 6 News

  • The 64th Annual Texas Jazz Festival kicks off today at Heritage Park with over 47 bands playing on three stages (free shuttles from City Hall, the Nueces County Courthouse, and the TAMUC bus stop on Ocean Drive are available) and runs through Sunday evening.  KRIS 6 News

  • Port leaders say the port finished big expansion projects and will look for new shipping markets to keep the local economy strong—helping the Coastal Bend grow.  KIII-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Linda Garrett—who had no symptoms before a routine mammogram detected her early-stage breast cancer in 2023—urged women to follow updated screening guidelines, with average-risk women starting at 40 and higher-risk women beginning earlier to catch cancer early and improve survival rates.  KRIS 6 News
  • Port Aransas EMS made history as the first ground service in the Coastal Bend to carry whole blood — a change that lets medics perform life-saving transfusions in the field — and the new capability is expected to help treat patients quickly in future emergencies.  KIII-TV

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Corpus Christi residents can look forward to Beach, Boos & BBQ at Cinnamon Shore on Oct. 24–25, where families will enjoy barbecue, craft markets, carnival games and live music.
