COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 88th Annual Jim Wells County Fair is showcasing young exhibitors' hard work in livestock care as Nova Meija of Ben Bolt FFA learned to improve her routine after setbacks from missing a heat lamp; the fair features a parade (today at 4:30 p.m. on North Texas Boulevard ending near Dixie Iron Works) and a queen's pageant at 8 p.m.  KRIS 6 News
  • Parents of children at the Boys and Girls Club reported changes with larger groups, canceled teen events, and fewer staff members—contrary to interim CEO Ralph Silva’s claim that operations are normal. Internal emails point to staff shortages, leaving families uncertain about what will happen next.  KRIS 6 News
  • Mission 911 celebrated 25 years of service with an event (The Art of Hope) at the Art Museum of South Texas where local stories of resilience and community impact were shared.  KIII-TV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Corpus Christi hosted its first-ever Parade of Piñatas at La Palmera Mall on Oct.21, featuring 20 uniquely decorated piñatas from local businesses that raised funds for the Día de los Muertos Festival; the displays will remain until November 2 and visitors can bid on their favorite pieces + all proceeds will benefit downtown festivities.  KRIS 6 News

  • TAMU-K is launching a fiber optics training program funded by the Texas Broadband Workforce Grant to boost broadband skills in South Texas.  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal employees at Corpus Christi International Airport have been helped by a donation drive that collected essential items for 45 TSA officers and 60 FAA workers who have not been paid due to the ongoing government shutdown—neighbors dropped off contributions on Oct. 21. The drive on the second floor will remain open until Oct. 31 and may be repeated if the shutdown continues.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi got a new Director of Public Health on October 20 when Dr. Anita Kurian was appointed by City Manager Peter Zanoni — she said she would restore trust, build partnerships, and work with Dr. Dante Gonzalez to maintain essential services. Her 34 years in health care, including key COVID-19 efforts in San Antonio, prepared her to tackle ongoing public health challenges.  KRIS 6 News
  • Nueces County Water Control and Improvement District 3 voted Tuesday evening to cancel a 25-year water contract set to supply Avina Clean Hydrogen’s proposed ammonia plant in Robstown and Calallen with 5.5 million gallons per day (citing a severe drought as the reason). The district had not heard from the company for over a year and some neighbors welcomed the decision.  KRIS 6 News
  • Nearly 60,000 Nueces County residents who depend on SNAP benefits risk missing their November funds if the government shutdown continues past Nov. 27 — local food banks and the Salvation Army are stocking supplies while Texas Health and Human Services plans to release funds when federal guidance arrives.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi Water is hosting a hiring event on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the CCW Choke Canyon Conference Room at 2726 Holly Road — job seekers should bring a resume for immediate interviews and conditional offers.  KRIS 6 News
