COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Ashley Shedd-Mungia of Wooldridge Apartments started a 24/7 community food pantry outside her unit on November 1 to help neighbors by allowing drop-offs and letting anyone take food or hygiene products without questions. She and community members stocked a four-tier rack with items like pasta, cereal, and shampoo, and about 25 to 30 families have already benefited.  KRIS 6 News
  • Michael Bueno of Clairelane Gardens said sewage repeatedly backed up into his bathtub since he moved in. The Corpus Christi Housing Authority said a specialized plumber found a major sewage pipe break under the building and that repairs are scheduled for tomorrow—his unit has not had new issues since early October.  KRIS 6 News

  • On Tuesday, 86-year-old Maria Martinez lost her Westside home of 60 years when a nearby fire spread to her house—her family has started a GoFundMe and plans to rebuild despite the loss of decades of memories.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Corpus Christi ISD will add its AVID college prep program to 11 elementary schools next year+ the program teaches students basic skills like organization and reading, and its current success in middle and high schools shows it can boost graduation rates and college readiness.  Caller Times
  • Tuloso-Midway ISD broke ground today on a $58 million career and tech center that will give students practical training in high-demand fields such as health science+welding+vet med.  KIII-TV
  • For the second straight year, Orange Grove High School band is headed to state competition — a result of daily practice and community pride.  KIII-TV
  • Haas Middle School in Corpus Christi has moved from an F rating to a B through teamwork—staff implemented new strategies and received strong community support. The turnaround shows that efforts made last year have brought improvements for students.  KIII-TV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi is partnering with Harte Research Institute to study desalination’s impact on marine life—experts warn that the process might increase red tide risks. Local environmentalists are urging careful review of the proposed method to protect the coast.  KIII-TV

  • The Corpus Christi post office was named after late Navy Capt. Robert E. 'Bob' Batterson — a Pearl Harbor survivor honored for his distinguished service.  Caller Times
  • Lawmakers nearly passed a funding bill that will extend government support through January 30 and keep SNAP benefits about 65% funded, while Nueces County enforces a burn ban until January 20, 2026 — Corpus Christi has approved plans for two new fire stations with construction set to start in March 2027 and H-E-B will begin a $32 million renovation of its Saratoga store in May 2026. A mobile clinic will visit Robstown this Friday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. to offer free health screenings and flu shots.  KRIS 6 News
  • City officials announced that Hillcrest parks are receiving a $26 million makeover with new sports fields and trails — and a $10 million pool — as part of the Harbor Bridge mitigation plan.  KIII-TV

  • Coastal Bend native and Cincinnati Reds catcher Jose Trevino served meals at Whataburger by the Bay Tuesday evening to launch a four-day youth baseball event.
