COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend kicked off its annual red kettle campaign on November 15th—aiming to raise $150,000 for local programs during the holiday season. Hicks Family Subaru loaned three SUVs to help transport kettles and the agency is seeking volunteers for its kettle and Angel Tree programs.  KRIS 6 News
  • Coastal Bend residents are receiving SNAP benefits again after a shutdown ended—families are getting help from the Food Bank to reapply, renew, and learn about their eligibility.  KIII-TV

  • Two Westside restaurants, El Vago Burger & BBQ and Smack Eats, will give away 500 free Thanksgiving meals to families in need on November 24. The food will be served at El Vago on Westpoint and Barrera and the owners hope to help struggling families enjoy a holiday meal.  KRIS 6 News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • London Primary School kindergarteners received 24 donated bikes and helmets on Monday as part of a new bike safety program supported by HDR Foundation and All Kids Bike nonprofit. The program includes teacher training and an 8-week curriculum to teach safe riding practices + is designed to benefit future classes.  KRIS 6 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Corpus Christi officials are reexamining the Inner Harbor desalination project to ease the region’s drought while debates grow over whether to sell the brine—rich in metals valued at $2.2 trillion—for profit. City Council paused the $1.2 billion project in September and local activists warn that discharging the brine may harm marine life and nearby communities.  KRIS 6 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • New data has pushed back Corpus Christi’s projected water emergency by months—officials stress that a new drought plan is still urgently needed. Leaders said the updated timeline requires fresh strategies to ensure the city’s long-term water safety.  KIII-TV
  • Since 2015, Coastal Bend State Veterans Cemetery arranged dozens of funerals for veterans with no next of kin, offering them a proper burial and honoring their service.  Caller Times
  • City leaders will invest $11M in engineering a new effluent pipeline that will send treated wastewater from the Oso Plant to heavy industry on the North Side—this project will enhance wastewater management in the area.  KIII-TV
  • Corpus Christi native Fire Controlman 2nd Class Toby Chadwick returned to his ship’s homeport in Mayport after a four-month deployment on the USS St. Louis—he served on operations along the southern border with joint exercises partnering the Mexican Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.  KRIS 6 News
  • San Patricio County is hosting its second annual Veterans Outreach Week, where veterans, surviving spouses and dependents will receive in-person assistance with benefits and claims. HEALTH NEWS

  • Corpus Christi Medical Center expanded its Bay Area Emergency Room on November 17 by adding 13 extra beds and biplane imaging that gives doctors two simultaneous views— improving diagnostic care. The upgraded unit will open to the public on December 1 while construction for additional inpatient capacity begins next year.  KRIS 6 News
