COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Corpus Christi residents can buy real fir trees for the holiday season at several local stores. Holiday Hills Christmas at 5201 McArdle Road is open Saturdays 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday through Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.—Gill Garden Center at 2810 Airline Road, Turner’s Gardenland at 3920 S. Padre Island Drive, and Woody Miller Christmas Trees at 1020 U.S. 181 begin sales on Nov. 21 with varying hours.  Caller Times
  • Robstown Young Futures held a ribbon cutting for a new community hub that will offer tutoring, sports, and family support. The facility will operate in three phases — starting with a recreational center, then a gym for indoor sports, and finally an outdoor sports field, while also serving as an emergency warming and cooling center and hosting Hope’s Closet events.  KRIS 6 News
  • Corpus Christi Ice Rays players volunteered at Coastal Bend Food Bank Tuesday, Nov. 18—sorting and packing food donations during the busy holiday season. The team will host a canned food drive on Nov. 28 and 29 where fans who donate at least five cans will receive a free game ticket.  KRIS 6 News

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Corpus Christi grocery stores and meat markets will have varied Thanksgiving hours as some will open for last-minute shopping while many remain closed. CVS and Walgreens will operate only at their 24-hour locations, H-E-B will open from 6 a.m. to noon with curbside and delivery options, and Prescott and QC Meat Markets will run from 7 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.  Caller Times
  • Zeke's Exterior Services installed multicolored Christmas lights on homes on Lovain Drive in Corpus Christi on November 13 and 14 to add festive charm (the company is also known for landscaping and gutter cleaning).  Caller Times
  • Local department stores and La Palmera will offer in-store sales on Black Friday, November 28 in Corpus Christi. Each store, including Walmart, Kohl’s, and Best Buy, will open at various times—ranging from early morning to late evening.  Caller Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Tuloso-Midway ISD is launching a new virtual academy that offers four graduation pathways, including fully online learning, dual-credit degrees, and trade-focused options. The program will give students flexible choices to pursue their diplomas while preparing for further education or career training.  KIII-TV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Portland City Council explored options in October to become water independent from Corpus Christi Water and is considering desalination and groundwater projects as reservoir levels dropped to critical lows. Council members will soon issue a request for qualifications to secure engineering partners for a long-term water supply.  KRIS 6 News
  • At a recent council meeting, local leaders approved a new memorandum of understanding with Corpus Christi Desal Partners to reset the pricing for the Inner Harbor desalination project — the agreement lets the city get a fresh cost estimate and start environmental studies on bay impacts. Council members stressed cost concerns and planned a vote next January or February to direct staff to create a design build contract.  Action 10 News
  • Corpus Christi City Council approved an $11 million deal with Ardurra Group Inc. to expand its water project that will send up to 16 million gallons of treated wastewater daily to the Nueces River or industrial users to save the city's drinkable water amid a severe drought. The design will finish in August plus the construction phase will be scheduled once the design is complete.  Caller Times
  • County leaders confirmed the contractor for the Bob Hall Pier project will miss the original January 7 deadline — officials expect further delays in completing the work.  KIII-TV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Hundreds of neighbors lined up last Wednesday at Family Dentistry on South Padre Island Drive for free tooth extractions provided by Dr. Baria Yassin—an event that normally offers a service costing about $300 to those in need. The one-day event saw nearly double the turnout compared to past years as many waited hours for the treatment.  KRIS 6 News
  • Federal ACA subsidy cuts may leave up to 130,000 South Texans without coverage next year — experts say many families will face steep monthly premium increases. Experts predict higher insurance costs will force some to delay care — a shift that could put added stress on household budgets.  KIII-TV
  • Texas will see Affordable Care Act premiums rise 35% when federal subsidies expire Dec 31, which may force many Texans to drop coverage. A startup will offer telehealth visits for $10 per appointment (launching Jan 12) as an alternative for affordable health care.  KRIS 6 News
